Not Allowed to use Hetzner

This probably is only affecting the plex resellers who are being the most vocal, now. I would hope, anyway. They cant be that short sighted to block an entire hosting companies IP ranges.

Plex lost their way long ago which is why my Lifetime Plex Pass has sat unused for many years now.

Its all of Hetnzer from what I can tell. The emails seem to be going out in waves. Also based on chrisc’s response, it sounds like everyone who uses Plex should be hosting from home, otherwise too bad for you

I used to host at hetzner but at the time it was unusable due to how plex worked with it’s streaming protocol. (Not) amusingly almost a decade later I still have issues on the LAN with the latest beta and an appleTV that many insisted was the best client device.

I still dont think it’s the entire Hetzner IP range.

I also was not aware Hetzner hosted Mac servers, so maybe the tags on this topic are wrong.

The logic used here is incredibly flawed and does not address the root issue. This will be a never-ending wack-a-mole problem, disappointing customers in waves, forever. I regret purchasing a plex pass.

Actually it’s closed source software stapled together with open source code. By definition of closed source makes plex a trade secret software company.

I feel you for your frustrations on this all the same.

@chrisc @elon did you really drop an entire hosting companies IP ranges?

Hey I’m one of those ā€œaffected usersā€. Can you please reach out to me? I am not violating the ToS. I share my Plex with my sister on the east coast and me and another Plex user (in Japan) have been sharing with each other since 2014. That’s the sum total of folks who have access to my server other than me. I’m somewhat at a loss for what to do. I have terrible internet choices at home and I 1) am on the road a ton and 2) relocate every 18-24 months for my work.

I received this notice, presumably because I have a server on Hetzner. It contains my music library. It has no pirated material. And I don’t share the server with anyone else, I’m the only user.

Could someone from Plex please contact me? I assume there’s a way for me to be exempted from this. A blanket ban on Hetzner would be absurd.

It’s not just hetzner. And they’ve basically threatened to ban any isp who happens to have users violating tos. So get ready for FiOS/Xfinity/cox/spectrum/etc to get banned too.

They admitted to blocking entire isps and basically said they will block more if there is one bad apple in the lot:

Wowie, and here I thought that I’ve seen most of Plex’s stupidity before, yet they always somehow manage to reach for new lows and surprise me.

My legacy server, not shared with anyone else but family (who don’t even use it ’cause Plex is too clunky and weird for them), is hosted on Hetzner, and this stupidity makes me so happy that I moved to Jellyfin a few months ago. The user experience is so much smoother, the feature set is actually richer in certain areas, and I don’t have to worry about this sort of :cow::poop: ever happening.

My only regret is purchasing the Lifetime Pass, but I suppose it’s a lesson learned – never give a company money in advance because they will always inevitably turn to poop. I sincerely hope you will rue the day some mentally deficient dude in Plex HQ came up with this change.

How lazy

Seems more intentional. No company can possibly be this stupid. They want to lose personal server customers so they can push their b-grade pay to play crap that was supposed to hit q2 of this year. But can’t make Hollywood happy without killing off their original loyal users so they can beg for content licensing and say ā€œsee, we cut them all off, all those home users only stream home made videos! Promise! Now please license us your content and so we can complete our departure from our core culture and abandon our customers.ā€

And they might be defrauding advertisers

I’m hosting with Hetzner, and it’s absurd to ban the entire Hetzner network. But I’m confident there’s usually a way to find a workaround. Let’s wait and see!
I can’t even wait for October 12th to arrive!
Try me!

Yes there are ways. But we shouldn’t have to jump through rediculous hoops for software we paid for with network tricks because Plex has masked their intention to please their board/Hollywood under the guise and dumbest/laziest method of banning isps. It’s all smoke and mirrors. They know damn well what home users are streaming. They are just cherry picking and being hypocrites.

Problem: There’s too many accidents on this road.
Plex’s solution: Let’s arrest everyone who drives on this road, TOTALLY FIXED IT! High fives all around team! Now let’s have movie night and watch something that not legally attainable via Plex and celebrate!

Plex is determined to shut down any and all workarounds. Its why they are blocking an entire hosting provider. It is unlikely to stop there since people exploiting and violating the tos won’t just throw in the towel. This is going to be a cat mouse game and end users who are using the service legitimately are going to be the ones who suffer. Its idiotic. Since plex knows who is violating their terms, they can just go after them legally. Instead they keep instituting changes that impact all its users. Next will be further limits to who and when you can share your server. Some end users are cheering plex on as we speak

As you can tell by the super high number of people posting here, it’s almost like every plex user is impacted by this … Some of the people posting here claim It’s because they have ā€œā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā€ internet yet then claim in other posts they have >3k tv series, hmmm wonder how all that ā€œlegalā€ data got uploaded to hetzner. Everyone knows this is just a first step, not like they wont be following and auditing the ā€œknownā€ accounts with high number of ā€œfriendsā€.

I think its more like hey there are a bunch of people driving ford mustangs with FL plates and 95% of them are uninsured/illegals transporting drugs. Lets ban all FL plated ford mustangs and see what happens.

I will take in to consideration the range of emotions running wild, and simply say, for all, keep it reasonable and considerate.

Those who can’t, I’ll be happy to provide you a quiet time out in the corner.

If you want to express your frustrations, all well and good. Cursing at staff and flexing your internet muscles, is not.
