Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: 7.16
When trying to select “off” to disable subtitles before starting playback, the option can’t be selected. Tapping on it only flashes for a short time and immediately reverts back to the English subtitle track, as shown on the image below:
If I start playing the episode with subtitles, I can then go to “Playback settings” and turn them off there, which works with no issues. Once they are off, the default for this episode will remain set to “off” in the future so this issue only occurs if the episode has never been played before.
Not sure if this is relevant (EDIT: turns out it is!), but each episode has two versions, that is - two different files, one being a DVD rip which doesn’t contain any subtitle tracks and the other being… an “alternative” file in HD that does contain subtitles.
If you switch it to “off” via server side\web before playback? Does iOS client remember to keep it off or does it switch it back? I see you mentioned it remembers once you flip it after it starts playing … just thinking of things to test that might help pinpoint stuff.
What do you have for your Audio & Subtitles settings on your account?
I think the last part of my report is actually crucial. I can’t reproduce this issue if it’s just one single file/version of an episode, only if it’s two. Have you tried reproducing it under those circumstances? I mean, does the same episode have one file with no subtitles and one with subtitles?
Reg. changing it server-side - that does work, if I switch it to “Off” in the Plex for Windows app, it remembers my setting on iOS.
My “Languages” settings are:
Prefer audio tracks in: English
Subtitle mode: Always enabled
Prefer subtitles in: English.
I understand that the “always enabled” part is what’s causing the default to go to "English’ instead of off, which I’m fine with in general because generally I’m only keeping subtitle tracks in files if there’s non-English dialogue in which case I only include the “forced subtitle” track, but still, regardless of the default, it should be possible to set it to “off” on iOS before playback.
Again, I’m pretty sure it has to do something with the double-file situation because I can’t reproduce it with single files from another show.
It does. I switched it to “Manually selected” and all episodes’ subtitles are now set to “Off” by default. Furthermore, I checked if it’s now possible to select “English” in the iOS app and it is so the issue only happens if these two conditions are met:
Server-side (or account-wide) language setting is set to “Always enabled”.
The episode has two files/versions.
There’s of course still some uncertainty such as - does it only happen if one of those two files has subs, but the other doesn’t or also if both have subtitles or what if one has English subs and the other French, for example, but I don’t really have an option to test this ATM.
I think you’ve laid it out pretty well and will need someone from Plex side to pick it up now to see about getting it tested or resolved. You might also double check your version - looks like you’re one bug version behind.
Same issue here on iPhone Plex 7.21. The subtitles were on when the show was watched, but they cannot be turned off via Playback Settings. In the video I am clicking on Subtitles, then Off, repeatedly. No change to the value or the display of subtitles.
