Selected subtitlte is automatically unselected for synced media (iOS)

Server Version#: 1.21.3.4046 docker plex linuxserver
Player Version#: 7.13 ios

Iphone 12 pro version 14.4

Ok, I started to sync some media to my phone. Realizing that syncing with original quality still transcodes. Googling this I found that I could update the profil iOS.xml. Which I did, I created a new iOS.xml and placed it in /Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Profiles (running docker in my synology). I also checked “Disable video stream transcoding” under settings → transcoding.

My iOS.xml is from here:

anyway, this all worked for me to be able to download media from server to iphone without conversion, YAY!

But..

now that I synced the media I can see that the subtitles sometimes change from srt to WEBVTT and sometimes it stays as srt, not sure why but the problem is that I cannot select the subtitles for synced media. As soon as I try this it automatically unselects the selected subtitle. I have uploaded a short screen recording of this problem. Anyone have any idea of why this is happening? It is the same for .srt files. I have tried different media too.

Same problem is happening to me too! My external SRT became MOV_TEXT after syncing but can’t be selected just as OP.

Having the same issue. Just looking around these forums it’s a widely reported issue for the past 3 years. Interesting there hasn’t been a fix as to my non-programmer brain the concept of “subtitles” seems to be something we’ve figured out some time ago! Good thing we’ve got PHT back though :stuck_out_tongue:

Still waiting

Anyone have any idea on how to fix or workaround? It’s quite frustrating. I’ll try just about anything at this point.

Bump!

I have the exact opposite problem. When there’s an episode of a show that has 2 different versions and one of them has subtitles, when I try to disable the subtitles before playing it, it won’t let me select “Off”, it automatically sticks to the default English subtitle. it looks exactly as on the GIF in the first post.

If I start playback, though, and go to the playback properties, then I can turn the subtitles off from there.

Is that with synced media or just using iPad to direct play?

I’m just using Direct Play. I figured out how it happens, though, and made a separate thread about it, in case it’s something else than what you’re experiencing: Not possible to disable subtitles before playback when using 2 files (one with subs, one without)

TL;DR - if occurs if there are multiple versions of the same episode, one of them has subs, the other doesn’t and when by default subtitles are set to on.

And another thread of the same ios subtitle problem…how many do plex devs and moderators need to start addressing the issue???

Already reported this issue, and other people also, in this forum…and nothing…

They are focusing in non essential things, like games on plex, podcasts, live TV…things that the majority of people don’t use and don’t care…

Starting to consider EMBY? Anyone has any other services that we can consider?
