Not showing any media

Ok so I had a hard disk failure and had to re-install Linux on my machine with a new hard disk.
I have set up PLEX server on the new hard disk with linux and I can access that just fine. I add a
library and then put a video file in it and the file in that folder is NOT showing up. I tried 3 other files to make sure it was not just THAT file and they did not show up either. I manually scanned and still
nothing is showing up. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

I have tried creating the folder on the desktop and also under a different folder on the computer as well and nothing is showing anywhere…

Thanks in advance… for any help you can provide.

In my experience, it’s almost always permissions.

Ok that appears to have been part of the problem. Now I have to go in and change every single files permission to 677 after I add it to the folder… How do I fix that so I don’t have to change the permissions for every single file? Thanks for the help so far…

Now it’s not working again… Can you tell me the best place to create a directory for plex to pull from? That would provide the least bit of resistance. Not sure why it is being a pain in the rear this time. Last time I installed it, it worked flawlessly till the hard drive stopped working… then this… Beckfield would you be willing to teamviewer in and fix this for me?

If I may offer a technique native to Linux ext4 file systems?

Once set, all future files and directories created underneath it inherit the proper permissions.

This is part of of the skills you’ll need master if you continue to use Linux.

If you want, which works good too, make a ‘sandbox’ place to play.

Should I just start all over again. Re-format etc and then should I install Plex 1st or do the step by step 1st?

I recommend performing the steps I did just as they are written.

It’s in /tmp which is totally safe to play.
Once you’ve done it 1 time, Now make a few variations with your own names.
It is really easy

There is one additional piece of information which is important.
That being, are these other files external drives or other internal drives which Linux has automatically made available to you in the file manager?

If so then we know what happens. The steps to fix that permanently are here

Will I need to do this for every single movie/tv show ect… I never had to do this before. I just used to put them on the disc and plex would pick it up and go with it, without a problem…

I have been working on this for 3 days. I have installed Linux mint, Linux Peppermint, Windows 10 etc and have not been able to get the files to show. the 1st step you gave me above did not appear to work for me. Is there a reason all of a sudden it stopped working. Was there a recent update that made this more complex than before? The last time I just installed PLEX media server on the machine (linux mint) and created a directory for movies and one for tv and was able to upload via FTP to those directories my files I wanted on my server and they would update etc all by themselves. If possible can you please connect to my computer and see what I am doing wrong and why this is not working right out of the box. Thanks
