Unfortunately anecdotal descriptions aren’t super helpful, client + server logs across an episode would be much more useful to see what’s going on.
Just so happens that my Android phone is happily playing music from my server over the local network, now playing shows nothing being played, but the network activity bumps up each time a new song is loaded. Client and server logs attached.

For background info, I had paused the app for approximately an hour to run some errands. The phone stayed at home, still connected to the local wi-fi. When I hit play, the app resumed, and playes the generated playlist perfectly. Library radio if it matters.
some more info. Just pressing stop, and selecting a playlist or radio button, and now playing on the dashboard works again.
I have an issue where it doesn’t put something in the play history if it wasn’t played all the way through. Is this by design?
Same. I was trying to figure out if this was changed for a reason or if I’m experiencing a bug.
Same here, not logging all watches in history,
It’s probably because the people aren’t watching through the credits to the very end. Almost no one in the world watches credits. I can see the thing being transcoded and who is watching it, but it’s not in any kind of history as being played. This really is ridiculous.
Im having the same issue here. I can send logs if one of the engineers would like to take me up on it. I imagine this is a bug that can be easily fixed. I just need to know where to send the logs.
I am seeing the same issue. I check a user’s activity on the dashboard and it shows 1 play, 1hr 20minutes. I check again 24 hours later, and it will say 1 play, 2hrs 7minutes. No information on whatever else was played.
Ok,
On way I THINK you can force this to happen on IOS is to play a show via wifi…and then not pause it and minimize via the square to the desktop. Then leave the wifi and not have cellular data enabled…and then go back to wifi and open plex and it should resume the file but before it full loads use the 30 sec skip or 10 seconds back…
Because using some combination of this I have been getting a variation on this error where it’s not reporting playing but I am watching a resumed show…and after some time watching I miss something and hit “jump back” and it does but the time code now displays the ORIGINAL resume time but I am watching say 20 minutes later…Now if I do anything else, stop, exit, pause and resume, it will jump back to the original resume time from the last closed connection…I’ll try to make this happen.
Yup. Strange. Wife is happily watching a show in the basement while nothing appears on the now playing dash. Server is silently dishing up the show with nothing logged.
I have the same problem with Nvidia Shield TV 2019. Some plays doesnt show as playing on the server side and at one moment the play is returning to the plex play info and it have not recorded the position of the played item. When i changed the direct play to transcode, the server registered the play. So i thin it have to see with direct plays… I have some problem with firestick 4k too since about a month now… image freeze and play seems to continue on the server side, i have to press back to plex and restart play to get it back… never had those problems before and i’m a plex user since 2013
I also have this issue.
Client: Shield 2017
Playback method: direct play
History/now playing do not indicate that content has played/is playing unless I switch to transcode during playback, then if I switch back to original quality the playback history is updated.
I’m not going to transcode at home just to keep a playback history, I have Cat6 throughout the house.
Yet another Plex issue that has received no acknowledgement from the devs.
I can confirm this issue.
Client is: Plex for Android 7.31.0.16605-beta Nvidia Shield 2019
PMS: 1.19.1.2645 on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Tried different clients and it tuns out that only the Shield is never being displayd as an active client. All other Clients (Android mobile, Plex for Mac etc) work fine.
Seems to be a problem with respect to PMS.
Any logs needed? (but I suggest that logs would be missleading…)
we should report this issue in a bug report section so that the devs get it
EDIT:
I just created a new topic with a specific bug report since I got the impression that this issue is either a) beta or b) Nvidia Shield specific
Similar issue here - I’ve two people streaming right now (talking to one on phone now), both with Shields (2017), and one shows playing (and keeps logs), one doesn’t even show up in streaming or logs.
So, I’ve users streaming from me, and no record of it in real time or history.
(I’ll add this is Linux server not desktop server myself - will check out that section of the forums next)
Same issue with official client on Shield (2019).
Episodes are not marked as played and when checking in Tautulli, nothing is seen.
Have an automation with hass.io to put lights on when pausing a movie, most of the time it doesn’t see plex playing anything and so my automation doesn’t get triggered.
When the new dashboard app for android got released, when I got the issue, opened the app and wasn’t reporting any play either
To add: On Plex dashboard or Plex Dash or Tautulli - not showing some content being played from some users, but showing up for other users. Seems to be user specific not the player they are using…
Same issue since a few days. With 2 Shield, both not showing what is being played (on Plex web, Varys, nor Plex Dash). If we leave the movie while watching, it will not remember the position we stopped at. Also will not record the watched in the play history.
Worth noting that it works perfectly when using Plex for Kodi app on the same device. Quite frustrating.
