NUC i3 vs i5

Hey everyone, I apologize if this has already been answered. But new Plex user here trying to determine which little machine would be best for a server.

I’d like for a server to be able to transcode 1-3 1080p streams at the same time. I was thinking of trying to pickup an Intel NUC. But torn between the NUC10i5FNH (i5) or NUC10i3FNH (i3). Would there be a reasonable difference between the two systems? They both support Intel Quick Play.

Thanks for any advice!

Has the i5-10210U @ 1.60GHz:

Has the i3-10110U @ 2.10GHz CPU:

If you are after 3 simultaneously transcoded streams, you want the i5.
This will even be possible to transcode fully in software.
However, it won’t be enough power to also transcode audio from “Bluray-grade” Dolby Atmos to stereo. So you better prepare your files accordingly, with a pre-transcoded stereo stream in AAC.
Burning in subtitles will also require additional cpu power. Be aware of that if you or one of your users requires subtitles regularly.

Using hardware transcoding per the Quicksync unit should at least free up enough cpu power to handle the subtitles.
