NVIDIA increases transcode limits from 5 to 8

In case anyone had ruled these cards out in favor of a Quadro card or looking for a patch to bypass the limit

One has to keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that these cards now can transcode 8 parallel streams.

All it does is to raise the hard limitation of simultaneous streams that was previously defined in the firmware/drivers, from 5 to 8.

Whether you are able to actually utilize all of those 8 streams still depends on the particular card model, its on-board RAM capacity, the resolution and codec of the videos etc. On an older card, you might be able to use 8 simultaneous streams in lower resolutions, but not necessarily in 1080p – or even 4K.

The info at Elpamsoft can help. It has info on the amount of VRAM used for various transcodes.

A 4K to 720p/1080p transcode uses ~1.2GB of VRAM, so unless the card has 8+GB of VRAM, going from 5 transcodes to 8 may not help that much.

The increase will help with 1080p transcoding, which uses ~350MB/transcode.
