Nvidia Shield 2019 4K Dolby Vision+Atmos direct play buffering

sorry have not yet. still looking.

Just posting to say have not forgot about this. Your sample file is very jittery but i don’t understand why yet. It is also very jumpy on Apple TV. Which is leading me to believe they are just badly encoded files but don’t want to leave it at that.

I appreciate the update, I’ve been actively troubleshooting myself daily - I just don’t want to poke you each day lol.

I am currently watching 13 Hours in Benghazi as a test - which is a Bluray rip rather than a remux with Dolby Vision + Atmos. It’s quite a bit smaller than John Wick in size and bitrate, so far on the Shield it’s playing perfectly fine.

It’s made it far enough into the film that I’m confident I’ll reach the credits, the XML is below.

13 hrs in Benghazi.txt (96.6 KB)

If this were a one-off I’d be comfortable with assuming you’re correct about the bad encoding, but since this is happening with all 4K files I have that match the same format (remux) and they all buffer at some point during playback, leads me to think it’s something else.

Should I discover anything additional I’ll send it along.

Currently watching The Fellowship of the Ring, remux buffered - bluray rip is playing fine. Both DV+Atmos. One file is 114GB the other ~32GB.

The only thing that makes sense to me based on what I’ve seen is it’s a problem with higher bitrate files and potentially a cache/memory issue.

Based my understanding of the log snippet I posted previously regarding Assumed bitrate and detected memory pressure, this sorta makes sense.

We will get to the bottom on this lol.

Are these things you are ripping yourself? or… let say… having a friend do it?

I’m having a friend do it for me, so I technically can’t guarantee that they’re perfect. I can only speculate based on what I’ve been seeing.

Well, I was finally able to finish John Wick in a single playthrough (nothing changed on my end) I’ve done 2 beta client updates since this issue was created.

Also managed to resume Fellowship of the Ring from about 20min in and made it through till just before the credits when it started buffering. I’m hoping that was a one-off, but we’ll see.

At least this in my eyes proves my files are fine and it is in-fact something with the client - or at least I believe it to be. I get the feeling I’m hitting the bandwidth ceiling for Plex or something.

OK. Thanks for the update on how things are working for you

A couple of weeks ago I looked up your Samsung and your Hisense, and I think the Samsung said to use a High Speed HDMI with Ethernet cable. That’s not what you used. Then the TV said it only had HDMI 2.1 on two of its ports, not all 4. I was going to ask you about those but passed out trying to make a decent post. Now it’s been so long I have no idea if I’m conflating topics.

In the meantime, I came across a few people with heat issues, because it’s summertime.

For less than $10 I was able to get a certified Ultra HDMI (2.1) cable from Amazon. The good ones have a hologram your can’t forge.

@kazz3r24 - Have you tried remuxing one of the problem files by using something like MKVToolNix? … > MKVToolNix Downloads – Matroska tools for Linux/Unix and Windows

I often find that when I interrogate a file with MediaInfo, it doesn’t always show the correct bitrate, or even show it at all.

When that happens, I will run it through MKVToolNix, and while I’m at it, I will always set the correct language for each track, set an appropriate track name, and importantly, remove any extra tracks that I would never need, such as foreign language subtitles etc.

You may find that after you have done this, you may get a ā€œcleanerā€ version of the file.

Certainly worth a try :+1:

I did go out and buy an HDMI 2.1 cable to go from the Shield to my TV, the soundbar came with a 2.1 cable that is in earc. What I didn’t realize though is the TV only has the 2 HDMI 2.1 ports like you mentioned, so thank you for that. I’ve rearranged my HDMI ports, so hopefully that’s the end of my issues.

Heat was the first thing I checked, cool as a cucumber.

Thanks again for the tip about HDMI 2.1 ports. Remux’s seem to be playing flawlessly now - with the exception of the Atmos logo popping up several times in the first few minutes of a movie, but it does go away.

Thanks again! Just had to keep it simple lol.
