I am new here and reading as much as I can, but I just started PLEX and purchased the Lifetime Membership.
I can live without the Dolby Vision and I have Dolby Atmos working with both my Atmos systems. The only odd thing is…when I use PLEX on my PC on a UHD movie (Aquaman), that i ripped from using MakeMKV, I do see the video as 4K DoVi/HDR10 (HEVC Main 10). When I open PLEX with my 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro on my Sony Bravia (XR-77A80K) OLED and my Marantz receiver (NR1711), it only shows regular HDR. It is a little odd that some people have success with DV being shown, while others don’t. I am not sure of the settings for each device, but it seems like those are part of the issue. I did have to change the sound settings on the shield and PLEX for Atmos to work. Dolby Vision I keep messing around, but when people start saying things like layers of DV, then I get lost, for I don’t understand those parts. Is it something where MP4 is the only way to see DV (for I heard MKV files are capable since I can see it) or is MKV fully compatible now and I can just rip by default with MakeMKV or do I need another software to use?
If it’s just something that PLEX needs to decode at this point, I am patient. Like anyone…I want the best it can be shown at, but sound is more important than DV being triggered. Thanks for all the future help in here. I would love to help out when I can, but I am limited in my knowledge. Willing to learn though.
Thank you FordGuy61. Here are my settings on PLEX for the 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro:
Plex Version: 1.32.1.17510
Settings in PLEX on shield:
Passthrough = HDMI
Refresh Rate Switching = OFF
Resolution Switching = ON
Refresh Rate Switching = None
Advertise as Player = OFF
Allow insecure connection = Never
H264 maximum level = 5.2 (Recommended)
Network Logging = OFF
I saw that the Dolby Processing was greyed out and looked to be turned off by default.
I’m not sure what you mean by the file is direct playing Krazeh. I put the file in a folder and when I point the PLEX app to the folder, the movie shows up automatically. I assume it plays direct, for it is not using an internet connection (as far as I can tell) & I don’t think it’s transcoding.
If it is…how could I tell? I have the Remote Access disabled if that helps to know. The movie is on my PC and that is pretty decent speed-wise. Brand new and a couple years old. It seems to be something I am missing in the settings, but not sure what it is. Here’s my settings thus far on my 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro, hooked up to my Marantz receiver (NR1711) and then to my Sony Bravia OLED (XR-77A80K).

Direct Playing means the client supports the media formats, and the Plex Media Server is not transcoding the video or audio tracks. The Plex Media Server streams the media unaltered to the client.
If the Plex client (ex: Shield) does not support the video or audio format, Plex Media Server will transcode (convert) it to a compatible format.
Monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing + Expanded View.
It will show you if the video or audio is transcoding.
I am not using Chrome on the computer. The movie files are on my PC, but I am using the PLEX app from the 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro directly to play the Aquaman movie. When I go into the Get info from the movie directly from PLEX on the PC, this is what it shows:
This is what it shows on the Shield on my TV:
Thanks for looking into this so far. I’m just trying to show all the pieces I have and understand. Little though it is.
First, turn on refresh rate switching - nothing to do with this though.
Your issue is an HDMI setting on your AVR and/or TV. Often each input needs to set to ‘Deep Color’, or ‘Enhanced’, etc. for full throughput, giving full capabilities like 12 bit Dolby Vision support. Look up such things for your TV and AVR.
I changed awhile back for my TV settings, for the TV input to Enhanced (Dolby Vision) and I just checked my receiver. It is also set for 4k Enhanced for HDMI. I did turn on Refresh Rate Switching to on to see if that made any difference, but…it seems like the HDR on the Shield stays the same (HDR10).
Checked my Shield settings & that is the one I have selected on it as well. Shows the same. It’s something I missed I’m sure, but I even rebooted my TV and Shield, just to see if the settings didn’t take right away or something, but…it still shows just regular HDR10 on my Shield.
Put them in an “other video” library, so Plex will not try to match them to any movies or shows.
The Profile 5 have no HDR fallback. If Plex tries to transcode them you will see a “color space not supported” message, since Plex does not have a license to transcode DV video.
The Profile 8 do have HDR fallback. They should play in DV, but if they cannot, Plex will play the HDR10 video instead.
I tried playing the MKV file directly from my OPPO UDP-203 player and it wouldn’t give Atmos sound, and the HDR just said HEVC when I pressed the into button, so couldn’t tell if Dolby Vision was triggered or not really. I did press info on my Marantz receiver and that showed 12-bits for HDR, which seems like Dolby Vision is working and when I tried pressing info on PLEX watching, it showed 8-bit for HDR, but also said Dolby Vision. Not sure what that means, but…should it be showing DOVI in PLEX either way (which it doesn’t, except on my PC). Unless I am doing it wrong playing it direct.
I’ll try the ts files, but the test downloads from before were mp4 and those didn’t show up as Dolby Vision either. I only have MakeMKV, so I cannot turn my Aquaman into an mp4, but…how or what do I use to make a ts? I am willing to try anything. The only thing I do remember though, is I thought PLEX does not play ts, ISO and other file types.
