Server Version#: 1.18.6.2368-97add474d (Synology 918+)
Player Version#: 7.29.0.15583-31eb3784 Shield TV 2019
I’m hoping someone can shed some light on the current state of Plex on the Nvidia Shield TV and when we can expect to see a workable version? Judging from the topics I’ve seen on here there are quite a few people with issues. I have 2 specific ones which I’ll detail below in the hope a dev can perhaps repro them and implement a solution.
First of all I have a few 4K movies that are now unwatchable whereas they didn’t use to be on my older shield. I’ve noticed that if I play with audio passthrough on then I get little to no video but perfect audio, if I disable passthrough then it’s the other way around with perfect video but massively stuttering audio. Other movies are much better but still experience small stuttering in the video. Some movies do appear to work fine however.
Just to note here than none of this occurs when using the plex app on my LG TV, everything works perfectly on all the movies I tested.
Secondly, Dolby Vision isn’t working on movies that come with this embedded, it just displays HDR on my TV when the movie starts.
Again on my LG TV using the plex app this works perfectly and the correct Dolby Vision logo appears when starting the movie.
I’ve tried multiple versions including stable and beta for both server and player. I did notice that the latest player updates during Feb gave me multiple frames in the movie I tested with instead of the static image I got previously though.
This is very frustrating as the entire reason I have the Shield sad to use Plex to be able to play movies with lossless audio through my AVR. At the moment it can’t even perform its basic function of being a media playback device so I’d really appreciate some help getting this resolved instead of just going back to Kodi.
I also saw there was a beta update for the server which I tried “1.18.7.2438-f342a5a43” that had a bugfix for the Shield but this has had no impact on the issues. In fact I went to play another movie and Plex crashed and then got stuck playing without responding to remote inputs for a while. When this has happened previosuly rebooting the Shield seemed to solve the crashing.
Yeah it’s the tube, well that is hugely disappointing. I expected more from Plex really on both issues.
I think I’m just going to get rid of this Shield then, no point in having it if I have to use multiple devices to achieve what I need. I’ve already had a nightmare trying to get Tidal to play the highest quality tracks on there (hint. It won’t).
The dream of a suitable media player that ticks all the boxes stretches on for another year.
shield pro is supposedly better in this regard. If it is not too late to return, I would try to replace it with the pro.
the tube has less RAM and is only 32bit android, versus the shield pro has more ram and 64bit.
plex dev’s have posted elsewhere that there are some memory issues they are working to optimize for use on the tube.
I have the 2017 shield pro/500gig, and while not perfect, it does everything I need to do, and shield is still the only device with HD audio support (ie truehd/atmos/dts-hd-ma).
As I’ve mentioned in other threads, dolby vision from 4k blurays, while would be awesome, is really still a pipe dream, and likely will remain so (likely due to hardware/licensing issues).
But who knows what nvidia will come out with next.
Tried swapping cables around but no change. All the cables I have are high speed (1 metre) so there’s no issue there. No need for high speed with Ethernet yet as none of my devices require or support it.
My current thought path is that it’s related to the audio codec for some reason. The codec on the file is Dolby Digital Plus but for some reason Plex sees this as EAC3. Changing audio passthrough makes a difference to the experience but neither are even remotely watchable.
Same issue here, narrowed down to the Plex app on the shield, only way to get it to play anything is to 1 uninstall Plex updates or 2 cast from my phone or tablet. Seems Plex is really lacking in the testing departments. Just like remote access tends to break with every update for the last two years.
