I recently switched my Plex server over from a old 2008 Core 2 Duo machine to an NVIDIA Shield TV. I setup Plex and everything has been going good, expect for the transcoder. I have an issue with MPEG-2 video on DVDs.
I ripped my DVDs using MakeMKV. I did not encode them, so they show up as “MPEG2VIDEO” and “AC3 Stereo” in Plex.
When I direct play, everything looks fine. 4:3 aspect ratio, check.

However, when I transcode to “480p 1.5Mbps” (or anything else) the image appears to be squeezed in and looks awful. Imgur: The magic of the Internet
I think this is an issue with DVD being 720x480 (3:2) instead of 640x480 (4:3). I think the transcoder is getting confused. I don’t want to encode to AVC, I want to keep the raw DVD quality and I have the space to store it. Is there a fix for this or is Plex/NVIDIA going to release an update that fixes this issue. It’s a little inconvenience that isn’t that bad but still bugs me. I’ll have to direct play ALL DVD content until the issue is fixed.
