Hi,
I’m using PMS on my Nvidia Shield TV with a HDD connected to it.
It works fine
I’d like to change the HDD for a bigger one
When i connect the new HDD instead of the old one, and even if i copied everything on the new one, PMS will not start. I need to connect the old one for PMS to start.
How can i use the new HDD instead of the old one, please?
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that i copied everything on the new one and some kind of “settings folders”?
Are you talking about replacing the actual system drive on the SHIELD?
I’ve actually done that in the past to upgrade it to SSD, this is of course not official and voids you’re warranty but I’m assuming you are aware
Or are we talking about an external hard drive?
If so I would recommend that before switching you move the PMS data to the internal storage than do the move again to the new HDD, ofc if you don’t have space this might be difficult.
Ah I assumed you did it before hence why PMS is not starting!
So currently if you open the app on andorid TV, the “Plex Player App” not PMS (although this will in turn open that anyway), go down to settings, and then under settings scroll down to the PMS section what do you have set for PMS Storage Location?
Hello! I saw this post and it was the exact question I had. Since the original creater of this post has not yet answered you (a bit rude if someone gets help and don’t respond anymore but that’s not my bussiness XD).
I have the Nvidia Shield Pro 2015 I believe (the 500GB model). The metadata and all that are stored on the internal HDD I left it at default. I have a 2TB External HDD atached to it with all my videofiles on it. I want to expand it with a 4TB one. What do I need to do, to switch the hard drives without messing my server up?
Is it as simple as copying the files with the external HDD hooked up on my pc and copying everything with Windows explorer to the new drive and then connect that one back to my shield?
I’m really sorry I didn’t answer.
I don’t know why actually I didn’t do it
I fixed the issue a few weeks ago I don’t I don’t remember exactly how I did.
But you were definitely right about the reason of the problem.
Thank you for your help and your time
Depends… the path will sure be different but if we consider this as any other server setup, if you add a new drive, copy all the files than add the new path to PMS, it will detect all as dupes, then you just need to remove the old path (do it only after you’re sure all is marked as having dupes (meaning all files where detected in the new drive/path)
Hey Mike thanks for the reply! So if I copy the files to the new drive through my pc and than put the old drive back at the USB of the Shield so that it is the same as it was before and then simply put the new drive in the other USB and through web app on my pc I should add it to my movie library?
No need to shutdown PMS first?
As for the duplicates: when I see that all of my movies have duplicates (with the blue 2 in the corner) and I can safely remove driveOLD, will the duplicates be gone?
Now I’m confused… you’re doing the copy with the drives connected to the PC? In that case you’ll need to remove the old one from shiled?
Or do you mean copy using Shiled SMB share? Just as a FYI this would be much faster in he device it self if you can connect via adb and use the terminal.
In any case if you do remove the “old drive” from the copy then I suggest stopping PMS, if not, nope that wouldn’t be needed.
Its more of a safe guard but yeah if all are detected as dupes then you know all files were indeed copied and have the correct permissions as plex can detect them.
Hey Mike! Sorry for the confusing haha :p. I thought copying the files was easier with both of the drives hooked up to my pc psychially and copy them as normal with Windows. Then just reconnect the drives to the shield and follow the steps I thought.
I never understood how I could reach my external drive from my Shield on my PC (the whole SMB thing). I know there is something with the NVIDIA_SHIELD folder that is writeable and I have mounted some NAS Shares on my shield. Other than that I know nothing.
I’ll just stop PMS, get my driveOLD from the shield and hooke it up to my pc and copy the files to the new larger drive through Windows.
Then connect both drives to my shield and add the new drive to my library. I’ll start PMS again back up and let it scan. Then I should get the duplicates you were talking about. Sorry for my little knowledge about Plex. I’m still a IT student and I’m learning every day. Love the concept and evertything that Plex does and stands for!!!
i had to change, again, my external hard drive connected to my Nvidia Shield (for PMS) and… i had the same stupid issue: plex server doesn’t want to start while the nvidia shield does recognize the new HD
