Plex Acting Up On Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Server Version#:1.13.5.5332
Player Version#:

Shield Android TV SW Version 7.1.0(29.6.259.0)

I have a 1TB WD My Passport Ultra connected to my Shield. This has been working well, for me. However, I was starting to run out of space. I purchased a 2TB WD My Passport to alleviate this. I copied the Movies and TV folder from the 1TB to the 2TB. I placed the folders in the new drive’s root directory, just like I had it in the old drive. I then connected the new drive to the Shield and that’s when the adventure began.

From within Plex, I went to the Movies button and hit “update library”. After it finished, which took less than 5 seconds, no movies were shown. I tried this several times, same result. I tried stopping the Plex app. Nothing. I restarted the Shield. Same result. I wanted to uninstall the Plex Server app. but can’t seem to do that on the Shield.

Out of desperation, I cleared the cache for the Plex server from within the Android TV settings interface. Bad move. After signing back in to the app, it seems Plex created a new Plex Server name. The old one is now “offline”. I went back to the movies area and tried updating the library from within the new server. Same result. I am not sure what to try next. The new drive is recognized by the Shield, so I’m thinking that isn’t the issue. Not sure how to proceed, though. Should I reformat the new drive, which I didn’t have to do with the old drive, and then add files to it? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If the Shield recognizes it, then so will PMS, so this isn’t needed.

Did you edit the library to point to the new drive? Drives are given a mounted path to access them and a new drive will have a different path, so you can’t just replace the drive and have it work.

So you created new libraries? Did the correct path show up to the new drive when you were creating these libraries?

OK

How do I do that? I’ve been through the different settings and don’t see how to edit the library. I mentioned that the folders have the same names (Movies; TV) and where placed in the drive’s root directory in both drives. Is this not enough?

I’m not sure how to create libraries on the Nvidia interface for Plex. I don’t even remember how I did it, initially. Every time I added a new movie to the folder on the old drive, I hit “update library”. I had no issues. It’s odd, but I’m sure common, that all the different device interface’s, (Amazon Fire TV/laptop/Shield) have different functions.

For instance, I don’t see an “Update Library” feature on my laptop’s interface. Whenever I add a movie and want to use the laptop as a server, I have to delete the folder then add a folder so Plex can scan and add the movies. I’m sure I am doing something wrong, but that is how I made it work.

I’m willing to try anything. If I am shown where I can find the step-by-step instructions for swapping/adding external drives, I am sure I can figure it out. Thanks for your reply and understanding.

Read this support article, https://support.plex.tv/articles/201154537-move-media-content-to-a-new-location/. You basically did this except the part about editing the library. Details on that are available at https://support.plex.tv/articles/200289266-editing-libraries/.

Thanks. I will read those articles and see how far I get. As an aside, would this issue be related to the Plex acting weird in other areas? Remember, I mentioned clearing out the cache for the Plex Server app. That’s when Nvidia, or Plex (not sure which) decided to create a new server name. My old one is now listed as “offline”. Also, since then. it disconnects and reconnects quite a bit. Or the server may show as “connected”, but not really connected.

Right off the bat, both drives are named “My Passport”…according to windows. Not sure how to get past that. Also, those instructions seemed to be directed at the Plex server on Windows, not the Shield.

The Shield runs the Android OS, which treats drives a little differently then Windows. Just using the same name isn’t enough. You need to edit the location that the library points to. Once you do that, look at the path that is used. You should see that it’s different than what the old path was.

Unlike Windows, clearing the cache/uninstalling PMS from the Shield, will wipe out your current server configuration. You will end up with a new server and have to start over. I would suggest temporarily changing the friendly name for your server to something else. Then from Plex Web \ Settings \ Server \ Devices \ Servers, you should now see your old server and your new one. Delete the old one. Then you can rename the new one back.

Ok, I removed the old server and renamed the new one to what the old one was. That went well. I then added a new location for my media and that went well, also. I finally got it to work as before, except…no live TV.

Ever since emptying out the cache, and in addition to the issues stated above, I no longer have access to my Home run tuner. I don’t even see the live TV icon. This is regardless of whether I am on the Shield or downstairs on my Fire TV. The icon has disappeared. Should I create a new post for that issue?

Since you recreated your server, you need to re-enable the DVR. Did you do that?

OK. Found it and re-enabled it. Everything seems to be working as it should…so far. Thank you so very much, MovieFan. Much appreciated.
