hope this is possible, if so how?
I doubt it as it’s not in a user accessible location. We don’t really know.
then, that bad news, it make it useless, as i would loose all my watched status that i collected over the years. Plex Inc need a way to import an existing database.
i have 15935 Episodes, how am i supposed to remember what i have watched, ever mind what my family has seen,
We have no way of knowing that until 3.2 is released and we can install Plex server on it. Plus, with 15935 episodes of whatever, you might want to stay with a standalone Plex server instead of using the Shield. The NVidia team made it clear that this isn’t designed to replace an enthusiast’s dedicated setup.
my NAS does not support HEVC transcoding, would be nice to be able to view media on mobile while i’m out about. My PMS does not have many users and maybe only streams to 2-3 people at same time, so not under heavy load and i thought the shield would be the ideal replacement device linked to my NAS as the storage.
We don’t know and won’t know until we can install Plex server on the Shield. We just have to wait and see.
would be nice to here from a Plex ninja on this matter.
the database and app are not in a user accessible area of the Shields internal storage. You cannot import or export it.
Ok, there’s the definitive answer. Thanks @BigWheel.

ok, thanks for the answer @BigWheel, then for me that makes PMS on shield a complete waste if time, this a big disappointment, and a big flaw that should be dealt with, maybe recode to use SD-CARD for database storage ?
as if shield breaks or gets stolen, etc we have no backup of database. For me having no way to restore a existing database is a must, and i would guess the same would be true for any long time PMS user.

This is a must have. We must have a way to do a backup and a restore of the database. We must also have a way to import our video preview thumbnails.
Must?! Really people? Ask, don’t demand stuff.
Saying “Must”, imo is not demanding, i am simply stating a fact that for me to use the Nvidia Shield as a PMS it is a requirement that i can control the plex database.
also as a Life Time Pass user, i feel i do have some right to ‘request’ things and why i have started a feature request here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/221509/restore-backup-database-for-nvidia-shield
so if anyone agrees with me please add your vote by clicking on the ‘LIKE’ button, thanks.
I bet if you root the Shield you will be able to find and backup the database. Something to consider anyway until the ability to perform a backup/restore through the application is added.
If you read through nVidia’s FAQ, you’ll find that if you use an SD card in there, you can’t read or write it with a card reader on any other computer. The same applies if you use an external hard disk to extend the meagre 16GB internal storage. The whole card/disk is encrypted and locked to the particular Shield device.
Which, I guess, has to do primarily with the enforcement of copyright than anything else.
If PMS wants to play on that field it has to comply with these rules.
So an easy file copy operation like on the other platforms wouldn’t be possible.

i mean from PMS GUI interface (http), i.e. in PMS settings have an option to download backup to local computer, and reverse select file on computer to restore to box, just like routers do for backing up and restoring configs.

If the database is stored anywhere on the Android platform, rooting will give a user full access to everything via ES File Explorer or another file explorer app. It may be a pain, but copying and restoring would be possible that way, theoretically anyway.

yeah, but we should not have to do that, imo thats like hacking an iPhone, and i will certainly not be doing it.
Guys I made a report to see if there is a way to move the PMS folder to a different location in the internal storage accessible by users. I am not at this time aware if it is possible or not, but again it is going to be looked into. If it is found to be possible it will likely not be available at launch as i have no idea how long it would take to implement
Please understand, I make no promises.
@BigWheel, thanks for looking into it.
