While the Nvidia Shield Pro is claimed to be the “best” server out there. I’d like to put on record quite the contrary. The 16GB space is a joke and if you add an external hard disk to it,… (well don’t).
4 Hard disks and 100 resets later, I’m forced to use the 16gb internal space (11gb after softwares).
Not sure what’s up at either end, but please, stop cheating people.
I have gone so far as logging in. Not adding any media to the server after a factory reset of the shield and migrating the database to a brand new external WD 4TB passport. 2 hours later I’m still being asked to “Be patient. as this could take several minutes”
Yes it’s a rant. Because honestly it’s a pathetic product on a pathetic product. Please plex, stop giving server capabilities to a 16gb devices. If they can’t shove a 500gb disk in it then they shouldn’t be allowed to. I am not the one unwilling to pay a bit extra, but being told something will work and waste days at end on it? Sorry won’t do.
I have used the 2015 Shield pro and Plex Server worked like a charm out of the box and once that went kaput, the obvious choice was this downgrade that I have to suffer through. I have wasted my money. Request others to please listen to my advice before purchasing a Nvidia Shield pro 2019 as a media server (with more than 500 files for metadata)
Actually I have never heard anyone claim that the Shield is the “best” server out there. In fact the best I have heard is that it is an adequate server just a little on the downward side of “good.”
Many people do claim the it is the best client but I do not even agree with that. I is a very good client as fa as the ability to play things goes but it is, in my opinion, far from the best client.
I have a Shield with a server running on it but consider it a backup at best and I would never want to have to use it for my primary server for any length of time. It is just too flaky and unstable. Much like my ex wife.

Well. Even I’m planning something compact next. Maybe a nuc or a mini pc (in terms of form factor). You see the youtube side of things and everyone sweats by it. Lot of people misguiding end consumers to use shield as a server. As a client I like it because of the ability to pass through most of the things to be dealt by my PJ+Receiver. But then again, atleast for me as a client it works exactly like the NS Tube which is 50 dollars less. I do use them both and I also have a roku as a client also a Sony TV with android has plex client running. (4 rooms with 3 devices). While the shield is definitely fast and has awesome voice search, and since the pro is not capable of running as a normal home sized server, it should be removed from the server capable devices from nvidia. I was also looking for alternatives and then realized the problem. The shield is running subpar components and just can’t keep up with the demands of even serving 1 client properly.
16gb is too less to be handling apps and Metadata. 3 gb ram, wow, why? My phone has 12gb and 256gb was made in 2019 and it’s not allowed be a plex server, why the special place for the NS pro
I think once nVidia dumped the earlier Shield Pro model which had the 500GB internal drive then Plex should have re-evaluated whether to keep supporting it as a Server. In my case I have a 2017 Pro and I’ve swapped the original internal “spinning rust” for an 500 GB SSD - I have my actual media files on a Synology NAS. It actually works pretty well for my modest needs, but I’d hate to be starting from scratch with only the 16 GB models … would probably go for a NUC now?
Correct. Now I game to pick a few moviea/shows that I’ll watch in the next few days. Wait for it to scan etc and then play and keep recycling. Not free from its own issues but cycling database on plex isn’t what plex is best at. It’s usable at best.
Especially if you’re planning to use it as a gaming device, it’s difficult to have a sustainable all family database.
