NVIDIA Shield Running Plex Server, Playing 4K Remux, How much Bandwidth?

Hi, I just ordered my Shield TV.

With the new Update for Android TV and Plex, it enables users to store most of the server files in the external hard drive to offload the inbuilt 16Gigs, I also plan for this.

I would like to know which Hard Drive would be best suited for the Job.
I was looking at WD Passport 1TB, its read write speeds are about 100MB (according to some reviews)

I`ll be storing my Media on my WD My Cloud and connecting them all via Gigabit Ethernet.
And I do Plan to play some 4K Remux Files.

Now to play 4K Remux files, I dont know how much bandwidth is required and if my setup offers enough bandwidth the have a smooth playback, preferably with least buffering when forwarding.

Are you talking about the bandwidth from your hard drives? For whatever it’s worth, I have a Plex server running on Windows, and I just picked up a new WD Easystore 8TB external USB hard drive yesterday, and have offloaded a few 4k remuxed movies to it. When I direct stream from that Plex server to my Nvidia Shield clients locally in my house, I have no problems buffering, even when forwarding. After about a week’s worth of usage, if there are no issues, I’ll end up shucking the drive and installing it inside my servers case. I’m just making sure it’s not gonna die in the first week before I likely kill the warranty!

If you are talking about the location of the plex database and files on the “new” option of the added drive get a 128gb or 256gb SSD drive or usb3 stick .

I have tried 128gb stick and 128gb external SSD both with no noticeable speed difference.

1TB is way too big if its just for PLEX

My Total plex folder is 69gb and i have 40k tv, 4k movies, 50k music, 10k music videos and 90k pics (note I do not save video preview thumbnails)
Just checked and it has 1.8 million files and 2.5 million folders in the PMS folder! - Why so many more folders I don’t know.

If however you do use video preview thumbnails then definitely make the minimum 250GB, unless you plan on running a small library.

How big is each video preview thumbnails?

I did try them at one stage but decided it is a waste of resources, but every one to their own!
