hello,
i’m looking for an 8tb hard drive for my nvidia shield, for my plex media. my WD Elements Portable with 4TB works fine, but is constantly full, so i need an upgrade.
the shield runs constantly, so the power consumption of the disk would be important - or an automatic standby when the disk is not accessed (is that even possible on the shield?).
Of course I’m looking at WD Elements Desktop 8TB and WD MyBook 8TB, apparently the MyBook is supposed to be better because of the automatic standby - but I don’t know if that works with the shield - and what about the noise level? Others say you should definitely go for an SSD. the only “reasonably affordable” option is the Samsung PSSD T5 EVO 8TB, which is three times as expensive as one of the other disks (but also consumes less energy and is completely silent).
I know there is no right or wrong, but maybe someone has a similar setup and can recommend. thank you all in advance!
If you want to expand the storage because your Plex server collects a lot of covers, for example, then you can buy an SSD hard drive (internal user). To save films, use an external WD Elements desktop, e.g. the 20GB. It automatically goes into standby when not in use and automatically wakes up again when you access it.
IMHO, you should definitely think about moving away from the Shield in general.
It is a very decent Plex client, but a very poor Plex server.
Its many quirks and restrictions in regard to use as a Plex server almost outnumber those of NAS devices.

IMHO, Plex Server & Client work great on Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019.
But you have to play your Movies in Direct Play. MKV with all Sounds and PGS or SRT Subs work really great. I use it since 7 Years.
But if you want to transcode, then you need another server.
Thank you. I like my Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 as a Plex-Media Server. I like the Direct Play (because of Dolby Atmos TrueHD-Sound and Dolby Vision and everything. The only thing is the perfect HDD. I have an 128GB SSD connected with internal drive. So that’s great. But the big HDD for the films is important for my, to have the right one
Hope I can get some tips.
I did…
Okay so 20GB means 20TB?
LOL, yes sure.
or is a Western Digital Black D10 Game Drive 8TB much better? so that the extra charge is worth it?
It’s a gaming hard drive. Would you like to play from your hard drive so that data is reloaded while you play?
I thought you just wanted to use it to watch and store movies. Then you don’t need a gaming hard drive, the much cheaper WD Elements Desktop will do.
Thank you very much!
