I wouldn’t suggest using the Shield as a PMS. If you have no choice then go for it, but for me it was more trouble than it was worth. I bought an N100 mini PC instead and it’s been more or less hassle free and it was a smart move.
I’ve used a nVidia Shield 2019 Pro as my main plex server for 4 years before going to a full unraid server this winter.
It works well if you are just servering up one stream on your local network. I tried to get it to do two 4k streams at once and it strugged which I kind of expected. Also don’t expect it to do any transcoding or all you will see is buffering. Other than that direct played everything I threw at it.
There’s a bug right now when adding new files, you have to go into the Web UI and manually scan the library for plex to pick it up. I don’t know how prevelant it is though cause the thread on this forum about it is pretty small. So you might not experience it.
If you want to use it as a server for Live TV & DVR…don’t. It’s a buggy mess and the basics like HW transcode don’t work…havn’t worked for years. If you want to use it as a server for your own movie/TV show files…it’s ok but less stable vs. another HW solution.
It’s worth noting that they finally fixed a HW transcoding recently (nvidia shield Live TV)! It’s been a LONG time. Looks like they’ve made a lot up updates to HW transcoding recently on the release notes…probably related to HEVC support.
