Nvidia Shield: no more update?

Server Version#: 1.31.1.6782

Hi,
There is no update for Plex server on Shield more than one month…
Is it normal? I’m on public release channel

Don’t feel special - Shield seems to have missed out on the last couple of beta updates as well!

I have seen this happen a few times in the past so I wouldn’t worry, better a good release than a buggy one given the flakiness of the Shield ecosystem and the difficulties in “rolling back” etc.

Seconded on this. Still on 1.31.1.6782. @anon18523487 or @OttoKerner please confirm if you may.

I’m checking.

Looks like beta 1.32.1.6999 has popped up for me this morning, so probably “crisis averted”

It WOULD be nice if in future the beta release announcements noted if certain devices WEREN’T getting a particular build for whatever (perfectly valid) reason. I know that used to happen in the past - it just stops speculation and people wondering why they aren’t seeing it, and thus stops these threads appearing.

I second this suggestion if you wouldn’t mind passing on that feedback to the team @anon18523487 . I fully support @StephenH idea of waiting for a stable release, so am ok with waiting months if necessary to get updates. The more I think about it, the more I think I just need to revert to a powerful windows/Linux server.

I wouldn’t recommend to my most hated enemy running a serious Plex server on anything except a dedicated computer. Running on appliances like a NAS or a Shield hugely restricts hardware power and easy of troubleshooting. I’d just do it as proof of concept and then move to a machine.

@R01k I would certainly concur that in mid-2023 that were I to be starting a new Plex Server build it would NOT be on a Shield TV, especially now the it’s the “poverty pack” 16GB model or nothing.

But as a bit of historical perspective, I purchased a 500GB “Pro” model in early-ish 2017 and upgraded the “spinning rust” to an SSD as soon as I was out of warranty, which gave it a huge performance boost and (more importantly in my eyes) eliminated hard drive failure as a major risk (that process also gave me an image backup of the system disk in case the SSD fails and I need to “bake” another one). I have all my media on a Synology NAS and only use the Shield as a server, not as a player (except for testing/backup) - my most used main player is an Apple TV 4K.

This has actually worked really well for me for more than 5 years, so I consider that pretty good “bang for the buck” and very low maintenance in my case. It’s a bit convoluted to backup the databases etc but I do manage fairly regularly. I read of all the troubles some have with various aspects of the Shield, but I’ve had none of that except for the odd minor glitch (touch wood!). My needs are pretty modest but I do have a couple of family members and friends who access it remotely and it’s never skipped a beat.

I know it won’t last forever and as you say it’s starting to be left behind in terms of features such as Sonic Analysis and hardware decode capabilities and so on - I’ll have some tough and expensive decisions to make as my NAS is also getting a bit long in the tooth as well. It will probably be a new Syno NAS and maybe a M2/M3 based Mac Mini or Linux on some kind of mini-PC for the server as a guess? But at the time the Shield was a very good option and I have no regrets.

Would still like it to be supported for a couple more years at least as it’s still working fine and doing 97% of what I need it to do!

I join your feedback. Shield is a good server to stream but without 4K transcoding. With 4K it’s slow, buggy and poor quality. 1080p is ok !
For music, I have another Plex Server on my Synology, dedicated to have Sonic !!!
My NAS doesn’t transcode anything in video, so I cannot use it for movies.
Maybe… I will plan to use a dedicated Intel NUC for music AND video…

That’s actually a really good workaround, has gotten me thinking - thanks for sharing!

And yes, I have very little 4k media as yet so 1080p does me fine. I know that will change rapidly in the next year or two so the window is rapidly closing!

As far as I’ve seen still it’s not practical to transcode 4K. If required, the best option is to reencode the movie manually and save it as another version. Back when when my TV didn’t support HDR letting Plex transcode 4K for it was the best way to ruin a movie night. My workaround was to direct play although that messed up the color tones on the display.

Well well well…

“Fixed release for NVIDIA Shield”

What does it means? No more update for Shield??

Sorry for the confusion. There was an issue with getting updates working through Google. This was fixed with the 1.32 series. The specific release note mentioned above was to address a bug with updating to 1.32.3 from 1.32.2.

We are not stopping supporting PMS on the Shield.

Phew. I was already doing research on which device to replace but thankfully the Shield can continue working for me.

Since update for the Shield are working again. I’m closing this thread.
