Nvidia Shield showing black screen or frozen frame instead of playing next episode

Having this issue on a SHIELD, its random and just doesn’t play the next episode - absolutely giving me the $HITS as kids watch 7m episodes so we are having to find the remote and skip manually every 7 minutes. REALLY starting to regret ever moving from Kodi, never had such elementary bugs with Kodi.

If you haven’t already, you should check out Emby. It’s been rock solid and their developers actually seem to care if a customer has an issue. The setup is easy and you can run both Emby and plex simultaneously.

thanks for the info, yup even reading their forums you can see Emby has very interested developers. Unfortunately I purchased a Plex Pass for DVR and remote access so will wait till the end of 2020 if things don’t improve ill switch.

Still happening for me. Seems to happen most often at the end of a show’s season where it keeps trying to play the last episode but goes to a black screen, but other times as well. If I let it sit long enough, I’ll see the “skip intro” option over the black screen with no audio. logging.txt (1.2 MB)

logging2.txt (1.0 MB)

Doesn’t appear to be an issue PLEX devs are seeing with too many users otherwise one would hope they would have fixed it by now.

Ended up resetting my Shield and didn’t see this issue for a week or so, then it returned. Basically the last frame of the previous episode is on screen with the “Skip Intro” option displayed at the top right.

There is another post about the same issue here:

I just switched from using my PC as the server to using an Nvidia Shield Pro as the server. Never had this issue in the past but since switching from PC to Nvidia Shield it happens all the time.

Experienced this issue on both my Sony Android TV and Shield Pro. Switched to Emby Premiere and it’s working like a charm on both devices.

I’m using Plex on Android TV here, and I have the same issue. Using a Toshiba TF-55A810U21 with Plex version 8.9.1.21693. Server version 1.20.3.3483.

It happens after almost every episode of any show, which makes the app fairly useless. After playing an episode, it will either repeat the same episode without A/V and move on to the next episode correctly after completing the runtime, or it will show a still frame from the beginning of the episode with no audio. Either way, the runtime will continue (visible with the seek bar) and move on to the next episode, despite the lack of A/V.

On rarer occasion, it will simply get stuck on the up next screen and do nothing, but I’m not sure if that’s a bug, or an “Are you still there?” feature that needs the ability to be toggled.

Seems like they should have plenty of logs by this point, but if requested I can provide. I’d just rather not bother when it seems like the devs aren’t even ready to acknowledge this issue exists at all.

Why hasn’t this been fixed? This has forced me to check out emby which works perfectly but I don’t want to have to switch to get basic functionality. Separate topic but Emby also has playback speed options that plex just refuses to implement…I wish the Plex devs were as forward thinking. They keep launching new features which causes bugs while not fixing the previous bugs.

Would be nice to get a bugfix after months of waiting for a paid app…

Issue still exists on 2017 Nvidia Shield Plex app 8.12.4.22902
FreeBSD PMS 1.21.1.3830

Will not advance to next episode automatically. You see the countdown and then it will attempt to play but will still be on the last frame of the previous episode. You can press back and attempt to start it again from the screen that comes up to automatically play the next episode however it will still not start. You must go back to the season episode list and pick it manually.

Also, potentially unrelated, but when you get near the end of a movie or tv show you cannot jump back at all without it freezing. Say you’re 3 minutes from the end and missed something and you want to jump back 10 seconds, the video will freeze. Usually if you’ve got more than 5 minutes left in the video you can jump back with no issues.

Yep, I have seen this issue many times. The play-next episode for the Plex app on the Nvidia Shield is completely unreliable.

Any update on this? I’m getting this on TCL Android TV and Chromecast Google TV. The episode continues to play but with a black screen and the episode timer goes in the negatives
