I’ve noticed that TrueHD with atmos direct plays with my setup, but non-atmos TrueHD plex direct streams and converts the audio stream to EAC3 7.1. Anyone else experiencing this discrepancy?
The log files do not have enough detail. There is no mention of The Hobbit or 1917.
Please set your server for debug, not verbose, level logs and play ~30 seconds The Hobbit using the Shield. No need for Kodi logs. See Reporting Issues with Plex Media Server.
Also, please include the XML Information for each movie. Save it as a .txt or zip it. The forum does not support .xml attachments.
Ok, so I’ve noticed that the issue is intermittent. Sometimes, TrueHD works fine, sometimes it gets transcoded to EAC3.
Something also to note: when there is no audio transcoding, Dolby Vision works and gets recognized by my TV. When there is an audio transcode (ex. TrueHD > EAC3), only HDR is recognized, not Dolby Vision. I’m guessing Dolby Vision encoding somehow breaks when the container is opened and re-packaged with the new audio.
I have a few streamers right now, but once they are done I’ll post some more logs.
edit
here are the logs. First playback had truehd with dolby vision working. second playback falls back to EAC3 transcoding with HDR. I’ve also attached the XML again.

I don’t see in the logs why the audio is transcoding. There’s some “not supported” type messages, but nothing specific such as channel limits, bandwidth limits, etc.
I’m going to guess it has to do with Dolby Vision. DV support in Plex and with the Shield is still a work in progress. Sometimes the Dolby Vision decoder crashes on the Shield. When this happens the video plays in HDR.
Maybe the DV decoder crashing somehow affects audio as well?
Linked below is a long and still active thread regarding DV support on various platforms. You might scan it for applicable info. Note that your movie uses Dolby Vision Profile 7, and there are specific comments in the thread regarding that profile.
I’m still working on picking up the ins and outs of DV support with Plex. Maybe somebody with better knowledge on the topic can provide additional info.
