Nvidia Shield TV + Plex + HDHomeRun = Confused

I’ve just bought a new Nvidia Shield 16GB and an HDHomeRun. I’ve installed Plex on the Shield, and managed to get HDHomeRun hooked up and providing channels. I have purchased Plex Pass.

I can log into the Plex server via a browser on another PC, the EPG has been refreshed and I have access to the full program guide. So everything looks fine so far, but (and this is a big but), I can’t see how to watch the live TV via Shield. It looks like I only have options for the original libraries (music, movies, photos) that were set up.

There simply isn’t an option to watch live TV on the shield via plex.

Am I missing something obvious here?

The top row in the “Program Guide” view is called “ON RIGHT NOW”. That’s were you just click on the show to start live view. Alternatively, click on “Discover” over the grid view and select “Watch now”.

If you do not see these entries make sure your Shield (Version 6.2) and the Plex Server ( 1.9.7.4460) are up to date.

Btw, did you complete the DVR setup in the Plex server configuration in your browser?

I have these options in my browser when connection via my other PC, but I don’t see anything like this when I am on the shield.

On the first screen of the Plex Android TV app go down till you see the “Program Guide” or go to the far left and you will see a menu which contains “Live TV” just above “Settings”. If it’s not there please check for updates of the Plex app in the Google Play Store and also check you connected to the right Plex server in the “Settings”, if you own more than one.

This is so weird. I just don’t have the “Program Guide” or “Live TV” options at all.

I only have one Plex server, which is on the nvidia shield. My app versions are:

  • Plex server: 1.4.3.3433
  • Plex client: 5.6.1.505
  • Shield: 6.2(24.32406.417)

Is this perhaps something to do with the fact that I have the 16GB version of the shield? Do I need to attached a USB thumb drive or USB external drive?

Version 1.4.3 which ships with the Shield does not have Live TV. Update your Shield by logging into your Google Play Store account from a web browser. I have the 16GB Shield and can access the Program Guide/Live TV.

OK, I just figured out that I need to log into Google Play from the Shield (I used the actual Google Play app on the Shield), and I have just updated all the apps.

Plex server is now on 1.9.7.4460
Plex client is now on 6.9.0.2683

Google play is reporting no further updates to install.

However, the plex client on the shield is even worse now, as the only options I have are:

  • Library
  • My Newscast
  • Settings

When clicking into Library, I don’t have even any of the default options there anymore (Music, Photos, Movies), etc.

One step forward, 2 steps back…

Success!

Logged out of plex app on the shield, and logged back in, and now everything is there.

Holy crap, this software doesn’t make a good impression so far…

Thanks for the help everyone!
