Nvidia Transcoding on Ubuntu

I would love to take advantage of the Nvidia transcoding features in my Ubuntu build! Two questions:

I’d like to figure out which Nvidia GPU I have hanging around the house is up to the task. Is there a rough equivalency in transcoding performance between a certain level of Nvidia GPU and an Intel processor that is known? Such as a GTX750Ti being equivalent to say an i7-980 or something?

What versions of Ubuntu and drivers are required to support the new transcoding offloading to Nvidia GPUs? Is there a specific Linux driver required to make transcoding on Ubuntu work that’s not included in normal distribution?

Thanks!

I’m not aware of a direct nvidia vs intel transcoding chart, but you can find what nvidia gpu supports what codecs @ Video Encode and Decode GPU Support Matrix | NVIDIA Developer

see also @ nVidia Hardware Transcoding Calculator for Plex Estimates

for 4k you need a minimum of intel 7000 series with an igpu of 600 series.

nvidia cards you generally need a 10 series or newer (some older cards may have limited 4k support).

assuming a supported gpu, video ram is the most important thing for linux/plex transcoding

4k transcoding uses ~1.3 gigs of video ram per transcode

Looking at the chart here, https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-750-ti.c2548

2160p has a red application flag meaning it won’t support it.

The nVidia GPU drivers version 418.30 is the minimum required version.

Anything below this version will be unable to communicate with PMS 1.17.0 and above.
