Using Plex in a car or on the run USB Media implementation

Hello,

I had the idea that it would be an awesome feature if you could use Rasplex "on the go" for instance in cars with monitors, in hotels etc.

Therefore it would be a necessity that Rasplex can read media files from a locally connected USB drive.
I know that Rasplex is just a client software, but since the UI is so much better and well structured than xbmc I thought this may be a good idea.

Having a small device able to play media on a TV in a non-home location is obviously a good idea, but since all Plex clients are utterly dependent on accessing media through a PMS server, this limits the choice of Plex clients to those with good support for 'syncing' PMS media to local storage. You could then 'sync' a lot of media to its local storage while connected to your PMS server with a fast connection (preferably Ethernet LAN at home) and then play that synced media from the local storage 'on the go' as you say.

But the PHT client is not designed for such mobile use. And RasPlex is an implementation of PHT on RPi OpenELEC OS.

The PHT developers have intentionally left out such functionality as they consider reserved for 'Mobile' plex clients.

That is also why you can't use PHT (in RasPlex or PC) to cast media to other Plex clients. Because they consider this a mobile_only feature.
