I am not having much luck with this, I am wondering if someone can help out.
I am trying to setup an offline plex loop… for someone with limited computer/tech abilities.
I need a player with a simple remote.
I have a WD Mybook with PMS loaded.
I can see the server while online.
I have seen the other articles that talk about how to setup the service to accept an offline connection - I am good with all of that.
I bought 2 different roku’s - the first was an express. I couldnt get it to connect to the WIFI when there was no internet (it would disconnect).
I bought a second roku with a hardwire connection thinking that it might stay connected to the network if there wasnt an internet connection. (it didnt - I now realize that the OS is the same, and there is no ability to manually do ANYTHING on those roku devices)
I have a Chromcast 3rd gen - but since it is really only for casting, it is hard to test it offline on a network. I am contemplating getting a chromcast with google tv and the remote - but I am scared I might be in the same boat.
I could try and apple tv - but they are expensive and I dont find the remote to be the most intuitive for someone challenged by tech.
There are posts about people getting offline to work…
Does anyone have it working with a simple player?!
I would rather not keep buying these players to keep trying them…
Roku only needs internet connection initially so if you can go through the setup first it should be fine after that… usually.
If you use an nVidia Shield it can be the Plex server and the player at the same time while connected directly to the TV. The Shield is considered ones of the more capable options.
An AppleTV, particularly paired with Infuse, provides quite a bit coverage in functionality and flexibility and the newer AppleTV remote is easier for many people to manage compared to the older one.
You can also use DLNA for a purely “I have files on a server to playback on a TV on my Network” and some of the client sides of that are pretty decent (see Infuse above) and Plex can do DLNA but lots of free ways to do that too. That’s not what you were asking for but might be an option. I use DLNA as a fallback myself.
Just some thoughts… I use Roku and iOS for my devices and the majority of my content is setup for native playback in most situations (damn SSA\PGS subs throw that off).
Thanks
I couldn’t seem to get the roku devices to connect to the network without internet.
Maybe I should have tried with an internet connection first - but I was a little worried because the place where I was moving this system doesn have internet… so I want this to connect even if there isn’t an internet connection.
I was actually able to get a chromcast with google tv to work.
The remote is ok and it will connect to the network even if there isn’t a network connection to start with.
If anyone else needs a device like that give it a try.
At $60 - it’s more reasonably priced than some of the others.
