Old NAS as storage for plex on Synology

I do use mkvtoolnix (currently trying to merge lord of the rings since infuse cant figure out multi part movies)

I have in the past ripped out subs so they are place beside the file. Is this what you mean or? Idx/sub i think it was called?

In Windows style tools, they were almost always kept on the side.

There is the choice. Most everyone, plex included, supports embedded or “side car” (external file).

The choice is yours.

If they are available when I rip it, I take what’s given with it because I know the timing will be perfect.

MkvToolnix will put that external sub back into the file if you wish. You may need multiple attempts to get the timing perfect (a few millisecond size adjustments either way to get lip sync perfect )

Learning how to “drive” mkvtoolnix will be the biggest task. Once you’ve mastered it, you will be cranking out files as fast as the network and NAS can keep up.

(that’s why I have a NUC8-i7HVK and 10 GbE networking – LOLOL)

Would sub/idx (beside the file?..not sure what its called) still give issues when transcoding?

From a 1019+ …

the sub/idx concept will be gone

You’ll see the actual subtitle in the file. Look back at my screen capture.
It shows the SRT subtitle is now embedded in the file as the 3rd stream.

If external In Plex notation:

Movie (year)/
  Movie (year).ext
  Movie (year).eng.srt

I think we are talking beside (?) each other

If i need to imbed the SRT into the files i need to get the SRTs first :open_mouth: Which would be a huge job yes?

I know its possible to rip out the original subs from say a bd i ripped and then it will be turned into Sub/idx (via Mkvtoolnix) but is that better or worse then burned in PGS?

Also I am sorry for if/when i misunderstand you

Oh yes! LOL
I thought you had the subs.

Plex will assist in getting subs for you or you can get your own.

Burned in PGS in advance if you know you will always want them. – I MUST caveat that by saying I need grab and verify Infuse does what I think it does.

Give me a few?

I have a few SRT. But most is “inside” the movie. I can pull them out as IDX/Sub via mkvextract. But still quite a job i think.

Of course.

I have been trying out Plex for getting subs. Though…I cant seem to figure out how to do It…i setup agents etc but i dont think it will collect subs when collecting metadata as long as the movie already have subs? (pgs)

Go to Settings - Server - Agents

Enable “Local Media Assets” agent

Leave it at the bottom of the list (that’s more than enough)

Now scan files…

The LMA attaches subtitles and images (JPG, etc) to the movie whose directory they reside in.

I think I need a break to digest all this

I cant get the agent thing to work. Does it need to be “empty” of subtitles before it will find subs? Most of them all have pgs subs?

Conclusion of all your help so far is:

  1. I can use my old buffalos as remote drive for a 1019+ which is brilliant!
  2. I can use infuse for what I want
  3. If i want to transcode with subtitles i need to find a solution to not use PGS. So i need to find subs for all my media ……Plex should be able to do it from opensubs but i havent been able to figure that out just yet.

Thank you so much for all your help. I will digest it all play around and maybe return and ask your more questions if that is ok?

You can grab a movie with PGS and try it yourself too.

I am processing a big BluRay and it does take time.

Thank you for all this

I finished the rip, with PGS subs included.

As expected, Infuse didn’t blink either did plex. “Direct Play”

Can you get plex to grab subs for that file automatic from open sub? While it has pgs in it?

The needs are satisfied:

  1. SDH,
  2. Foreign Langage (forced) to English.

If I want other subs, I will need do it myself.

Hmm

I only got it to get subs for me when I installed something called sub zero
Though some of those seems out of sync so far.

Well I don’t want to waste any more of your time for now
I think I’m still going for the 1019+ (With Plex pass) since more powerful cpus is quite a bit more expensive here.

You have been a fountain of knowledge and I thank you from the bottom of my heart

Not sure if this is something you can answer :S

But I got a Synology NAS. And i added all my old Buffalo drives as NFS drives. I noticed that The NFS does not show ALL my files…my entire star treck collection on 1 disk is around 4tb (direct rip of everything blu ray) and it only seem 600-700gig of that. Whole folders are empty.

Do you have any idea why this could be?

Well i did CIFS instead  That worked perfectly
