One device cannot stream smoothly from server

Server Version#:4.147.1
Player Version#:1.112.0.359-0d79a49f

I have 1 laptop that struggles to play from my Plex server. It has worked fine for the last 2 years, but playback has suddenly slowed to basically frame by frame on the Windows Desktop player! It works better via the browser but automatically drops quality to SD or less. There is another laptop and a Windows tablet using the server in the same house (and from outside), plus 2 android devices that have no issues, it is just my LENOVO MT 82TT BU, so I assume it is a local setting, but I can’t identify it?

My network modem is a TP Link BT810 hyper fibre modem (2k up and down) which is connected to the server by 2.5 GbE cable and all other streaming devices connect via Wi-Fi. I also have 2 older routers connected to the modem, Asus GT-AXE16000 (also 2.5 GbE cable used for gaming) and a Xiaomi AX3600 (1.0 GbE cable used for Mi Home and surveillance cameras). All devices can use any Wi-Fi channel from any router without issue to connect to the server and stream, but none work well with the Lenovo laptop. The server motherboard has Wi-Fi 7 built in, so I tried a mobile hotspot from the server, but that made no difference either.

The remote access sometimes shows accessible outside the network but is often showing not accessible. Using the manual port and clicking retry usually fixes it for a while, then it fails. Though it has never really worked, it has also never made a difference, all devices have had no streaming issues, until now with outside network accessible or non-accessible and only the Lenovo laptop has a problem.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Desktop player, but this had no effect.

This problem started a couple of months ago, but I was planning to upgrade the server, which I have done but it has made no difference. The server was based around a Ryzen 7 3700X but is now a Intel Core Ultra 7 265 CPU 20 core, MB B860 Aorus ELITE WF7 ICE, 32Gb Ram, 2TB M.2 drive, videos stored on Seagate Seawolf mirrored RAID.

Any suggestions?

I have also noticed if I am watching Prime in Chrome and I open the Plex desktop player, Prime crashes and I get a playback error message. If I shut Plex, I can restart the Primer video, but I can’t if Plex stays open!

I am first wondering why you got so many routers this is probably causing a double Nat which can’t be good for gaming perhaps at some point think about getting rid and run on just one router and use longer cables or use switches

You have not mentioned if you connect through WiFi or plugging in I would say to try plug your laptop direct into the server pc to see if it works to rule out connection problems and use a different lan cable to rule that cable out

You also put server version 4.147 so unsure which server version that is but either way make sure you have the latest

If your still having problems i would say it’s a problem with the laptop perhaps outdated graphic drivers or lan drivers or WiFi driver it could even be a corrupt file on the laptop there’s a number of things it could be as you said it worked ok for the last 2 years you know it capable so unless something physical has broke in the laptop the only other thing would be either system restore to when you know it was working or pc reset to reinstall windows or which ever system your using to rule out a corrupt files

Thanks for your response. Only the server is hard wired to the modem, everything else is Wi-Fi, so that was a good suggestion to check by connecting the laptop with a cable. This had no effect and given both Netflix and Prime crash when I launch Plex I think it is a Windows related issue. Looks like some sort of problem when the system is called to play videos and it is creating a conflict and so I think a Windows reset would be best.

I was not familiar with double NAT, so did some research, thanks. I think that is likely to be occurring but doesn’t seem to be too much of a problem. By gaming I mean mobile gaming on my phone, no consol or PC games so the double NAT issue is unlikely to cause a problem. The reason for multiple routers is I wanted to keep different services separate. For example, the Xiaomi router and Wi-Fi channels are used exclusively for Mi Home products, including 4 streaming cameras to 6 monitors, which has worked seamlessly for 6 years and there are bunch of other Mi Home products, sensors, doorbells etc and they are all joined together and work well in their own ecosystem.

A Windows reset has fixed the problem
