One HDD crashed, Plex was tied to it for music...

Hey there! So last night an older 2tb drive failed (my F: drive). No big worries- it was pretty old and the data is backed up two times over on other drives/devices. I’ve got Amazon delivering me its replacement today.

So, F:\Music was linked into Plex. I have another drive online (P:\Music) that’s working fine and was a clone of F:\Music.

My question is: What is the easiest and least aggressive way to point Plex to P:\Music instead of F:\Music? I know sometimes with big library (~70k files) shifts like this, things can get super messy and that’s what I’m trying to avoid. I’m hoping there is a config file somewhere that I could just search/replace “F:” with “P:”?

Thanks for the help!

The least problematic way (for Plex) is to change the drive letter of your backup drive from P: to F:

Are both local drives or network drives?

Local drives: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-change-a-drive-letter-2626069

Networked drives: even easier https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/windows_fcab_connect_drive.mspx?mfr=true

If you can’t change the drive letter (maybe other software using P) then you can SHARE the P drive with yourself and then map a drive to it. Then when you get the replacement drive copy back to it and unshare the drive.

Ah ha, that is an idea i was bouncing around in my head. But unfortunately I have other data on P: linked up with other programs that will break if I change the drive letter like that. Would cause a larger headache for me for sure haha

So I think what I’ll end up doing is once I get this new 4tb drive from Amazon tonight, I’ll just copy over everything and name the new 4tb drive F: … that should do the trick for me I believe!

Data migration complete, went smoothly!

Just renamed the drive back to F and it was also seamless! Everything is back to normal and running as it should.

Thanks again for the help fellas!

Nice, always glad to see a tough problem worked out with minimal fuss!
