One music library gets stuck scanning /updating library

Server Version#:Ts-251+ QNAP
Player Version#:1.18.9.2578
I have my music split into two libraries. When I try to scan one of them to update it the scan gets stuck and keeps ‘scanning’ but not showing any results. When I check the icon it says it is ‘scanning’ a particular album. This goes on for hours. When I remove that album from the library and try again, it says it is scanning another album and doesn’t move off that one!. So obviously some thing is wrong with that particular library/scan.
The other library has no problems and scans/updates beautifully.

To get around this I have to restart my NAS which takes 15 minutes to shut down, reboot and get ready to use again. clearly not a good solution.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Thanks

There are some folks who, due to the amount of music they give PMS all at once, it takes a full week to scan. It happened because they had all their music in one massive structure and gave PMS the top-most directory.

Better results can be had by breaking into blocks of not more than 2500 Albums at a time and adding each of those directories as the one preceding it completes. There is no limit to the number of directories you can add.

thanks Chuck. did that. now have 9 libraries with between 750 and 2500 albums in each. works a treat

Interesting… if there are more than 2500 albums per directory, would multiple scans of the same library pick up the rest? What I have noticed is re-scanning a large library will pick up new items again. Would doing this multiple times have the same affect as moving in 2500 albums at a time?

I have found sub-dividing (divide and conquer technique) to work better.

example:

music/
  group 1/
  group 2/
  group 3/
  group 4/
  etc/

I first add: music/group1 and let it complete.
I then return and update the folder list (add) music/group2.
I repeat this process until all are added.

If any difficulties are encountered along the way, I resolve them. I find it easier to do so this way. (fewer things to deal with as a group)
