Hello, I’m looking to mine your collective knowledge for my server and some weird issues.
I have a collection of certain movies that just refuse to play outside my LAN, they mostly are recent releases and play fine at home with all my devices.
The vast majority of my collection plays fine without any issue at home or on the client end.
My clients have been letting me know they can’t play these titles on streaming devices (however some can within a browser it seems).
I was at my brother’s on the weekend and got to test it for myself. Things won’t play on his roku despite me playing with the settings. Wouldn’t even play on my own phone after trying to change the playback settings. The title in question plays fine at home on my wifi.
Funny enough the titles in question are even ones I purposely got in low bit-rate to test.
I have been ripping my own Blu-Rays as well as a non-compressed remux and these play totally fine everywhere! Even though the filesizes and bitrates are way higher!
It’s driving me crazy and I’d appreciate any tips you could give me!
I run a Synology DS920+ with max transcode settings. Lifetime Plex Pass.
Thank you so much!
I’ve attached the logs. I got a client to test a few titles that were acting up and he couldn’t play them, but had no problems playing some of my own Blu-Ray rips at full quality.
For some reason certain files aren’t working on my laptop right now either, but will play fine on my Apple TV (connected via ethernet).
Do you have a lot of Music or photos or , in general, a lot of media which is really nicely organized into folders ?
I’m asking because the only problem I found was when attempting to play back a track with Dolby audio in it.
When we transcode Dolby audio, we need to use their tool. Their tool requires two transcoder “Notify” slots; the same notify slots that keep track of media folder changes.
On DSM 7, the default maximum DSM can monitor is 65536 folders without making any changes (customize)
If you have more than that, all that needs to be done:
Get a total count of all the folders in use (get pencil, paper, / calculator)
Use Filestation → Properties (tab) for each of your media folders
Get the count of how many folders are in each shared folder
Total them up.
Add extra for future growth
Put that in the DSM 7 configuration file and restart
Hmm, I added up all the folders in my media library and it’s only 5014.
Folders on the entire NAS only total 5244.
I do have everything nicely organized into folders, every movie has it’s own and I strictly follow the Plex naming conventions.
Ok… so that’s confusing because here is the failure. “EAE” is the Dolby Easy Access Encoder" which converts audio

Another question : Does
/volume1/AV Library/2 TV Shows MT/Star Trek The Next Generation (1987)/Season 07/Star.Trek.The.Next.Generation.S07E01.Descent.Part.2.1080p.BluRay.x264.mkv
have subtitles in it?
It looks like it does.
I ask here because you have Hardware Transcoding capability but it’s not active.
If it doesn’t have subtitles, would you please check Settings - Server - Transcoder - Show Advanced
Make sure all the hardware acceleration settings are enabled.
I know that client likes to watch with subtitles so I’m sure he has them enabled and I think they are internal to the file.
In terms of the Hardware Transcoding it seems to be enabled on my end…Transcoder Quality is set to “make my CPU hurt” so not Sure why it would be showing up as not active.
The Star Trek files play fine for that client.
The files in question I was testing was M3GAN and The Whale. Also Knock at the cabin.
I would change the “make my CPU hurt” . You’re using a Synology NAS.
If you try to make it hurt, it’ll melt.
That setting only kicks in when there’s software transcoding.
When you are using software , you’re probably burning subtitles, and the CPU will hate you .
Synology’s are known for not have a fast CPU at all.
We’ve all begged them to make something faster. They won’t.
You’re best to set it at “Automatic”. It will decide what works best for the client that’s streaming from it and what bit rates/conversions are involved.
Hardware transcoding doesn’t take CPU so it will have no effect for the vast majority of things you do transcode.
The only thing I’m trying to figure out is the audio problem.
Do you have a value in Transcoder Settings ?
Transcoder temporary directory
That should be blank (no spaces or anything)
As for the user who likes subtitles ? See if you can:
Get Text based (SRT - ASS) subtitles. They are easier to deal with
PGS - VOBSUB - DVDRIP are imaged based and require burning into each frame on almost every player.
– This is something your Syno cannot do .(Not fast enough)
Have him make certain subtitles are set to “Automatic”.
Only use subtitles when absolutely necessary or coordinate with you to optimize the media (burn in the subtitles) in advance – which is an option.
I set the make my cpu hurt setting last week trying to figure out why these certain files won’t load at all.
They’re 1080p compressed files, so shouldn’t be very taxing. Yet my full quality bluray remuxes I make myself have no trouble playing at all!
I will get my friend on the subtitles fixed up.
But I will note this problem still occurs even when it’s just one single client on my server.
And it all seems to be the recently released movies. Very strange stuff.
I’ve tried multiple downloads of different files, switched my ‘downloading program’ to see if was corrupting files somehow.
I’ve tried on multiple computers now but every time I hit “View VXL” I just get taken to a blank screen. Best I can do apparently is a screen shot of the Media Info.
