OpenMediaVault + Docker

The computer I use as my Plex server is an Intel NUC with a Core-i3 and 4GB RAM running Win10. I’m considering upgrading to a newer Core-i5/i7 so that the server can handle transcoding better. I’m going back and forth between using Ubuntu and OpenMediaVault, the latter of which is a bit more appealing since I would also like to set this computer up as an NAS with RAID. OMV seems to be a little easier to manage for someone like me who isn’t as well versed in Linux.

In researching OMV, I see a lot of people seem to install Docker, something I’m not really familiar with. Since there seems to be a Plex server plugin for OMV already I don’t see the benefit of installing Docker. Is one version of the plugin updated more frequently? Can anyone shed a bit more light on Docker and the benefits?

Or should I just install Plex via SSH to ensure I have the latest and greatest?

Thank you.

Plex hits the repositories and then the docker images are updated, usually only a delay of a day or two. Docker opens you up to 100’s more ready to run applications than the OMV Plugins do, plus frees up the OMV maintainer to focus on the core capabilities of the NAS OS vs maintaining plugins.
