Should I use Docker for my new Plex install?

I’m installing a new server to house my PMS and was just reading up on Docker - is it worthwhile using this? And if so, why? I’m also planning on running Sonarr and Radarr.

Thanks!

Humbly stated?

NO.

  1. Are you planning to move your Plex server to a new machine frequently?
  2. Are you skilled in Linux ( cd, tar and su commands ) ?
  3. Are you wiling to make the connection to the hardware for transcoding yourself?

I’ve run PMS on my Mac for 10+ years, so I don’t move machines very frequently at all!! I’m definitely skilled in Linux but it sounds like I should just run it on my Linux server without Docker!

Thanks for the input!

It’s my experience that if you know enough Linux to install and run PMS on Linux

then you have the skills needed should you ever want to clone/backup/restore/move it around.

I did my best to document all the steps in server-linux-tips (forum tag) for these annoying little tasks.

From what I’ve read on here, anyone that abstracts it away from running close to the hardware… via docker or VMs, usually winds up having headaches. Either via networking, or complicated file passing, or complicated issues getting to graphics for hw transcode, etc.
