OpenSubtitles.org agent wrongly reused subtitles from other show with similar name in library

Server Version#: 1.21.3.4021
Player Version#: 4.52.1

Update: Please see OpenSubtitles.org agent wrongly reused subtitles from other show with similar name in library - #7 by programatix for my investigation details from the logs.

I have a TV Series, titled Mickey Mouse matched to metadata Mickey Mouse - TheTVDB.com. However Plex OpenSubtitles.org agent downloaded the subtitles for The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse. I confirmed that the download subtitles are indeed from The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.

The file names are as follow,

How do I fix this? I tried using the Search... feature when selecting the subtitles and I get result such as below,

If I typed the search string manually, it’s always No results. I actually fine with “no result”, but is very annoyed when it’s displaying the wrong subtitles.

Yes, I am aware that there is no title for it. I’m ok with it. The problem is, why does Plex downloaded the ones from another show? Is there a way to fix this as now, I have to manually turn off the subtitle when playing the episodes.

It’s auto downloaded as such,
image

I can’t even delete it by clicking the “x” button. When I clicked on the “x”, it show the delete confirmation. After clicking the Delete button, the subtitle is still there.

My players are set to always display subtitle. Since Plex downloaded the wrong one (from the wrong show), it keeps showing the subtitle whenever I play an episode.

Yes, I can select “Off”, but this will apply to my profile only. Other people profiles (say my children) will still have the one “auto” downloaded by Plex selected.

Again, the subtitles are “auto” downloaded by Plex via it’s agent after I added the show to the library, and they are “auto” selected.

Hi,

Before proceeding with the suggested steps, I checked all the permissions mentioned and they are all correct. Just to make sure, I followed through the suggested steps. After that, I tried to delete the subtitle using the “x” button and the subtitle is not deleted. I tried deleting a show and it got deleted fine. This indicates it is not a permission issue.

I checked Plex Media Server.log to see if it show where the subtitle is taken from and found the following.

I’m guessing that the following occurred.

  1. Opensubtitles.org agent attempted to find the subtitle for the episode but none found.
  2. It then searches the library itself and found a similarly named show called The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.
  3. It then compared the running time of the subtitle associated with the episode of that show with the current Mickey Mouse episode and the ratio are all around 0.3.
  4. Due to this result, it decided to use the subtitle from The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse and linked it.

My guess is, due to the subtitle being linked from another “video”, it cannot be deleted.

I have to say that this is a good feature as Plex is trying to re-use any previously downloaded subtitles but the “comparing” algorithm doesn’t seem to be “correct”, which I think can be categorized as a bug?

As a note, I already have The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse (https://www.thetvdb.com/series/the-wonderful-world-of-mickey-mouse) in my library. The subtitles for the show were found in opensubtitles.org and were auto-downloaded by the agent.

This issue shown itself when I added Mickey Mouse (Mickey Mouse - TheTVDB.com) later.

So, to replicate this issue, 3 conditions must be met.

  1. The 2 TV show must have similar name? In this case, the keyword, “Mickey Mouse” appeared in both titles.
  2. The TV show which was added first has it subtitles available in opensubtitles.org
  3. The TV show which is added later has no subtitle available in opensubtitles.org

What version are you using? I don’t see any Plex TV Series in mine. Is it a feature of a future release? When will it be available? If it is still long, shouldn’t the opensubtitle.org agent fixed first? As long as there is no other workaround, I believe it should be fixed first.

Thank you @TeknoJunky. Seems like it’s in preview state. Not even beta, thus might be still a long wait. Not worth the trouble to test a preview when my server is being used by my family members who are not very tech orientated, especially my very young children. They just want to watch the shows without the annoyance.

They all speaks English but they still want subtitles to be shown when watching English shows because sometimes they don’t want to increase the volume just to hear what is spoken in the show, or perhaps what’s spoken is too fast to be heard. Instead of rewinding the show (which is sometimes a pain in Plex as it would pause for a very long time or might even totally break the playback), they would fallback to the subtitle on the spot. Thus, most of us have subtitles always enabled (global setting in the clients). Again, it’s ok if there is no subtitle available, but if it is showing wrong subtitle (from other show), then this is annoying.

Furthermore, in the case of Mickey Mouse, the whole sessions (all episodes) are effected, and there is no solution or workaround except to manually turn off the subtitle on every episode on each playback.

I don’t know how long is long, but the movie scanner went through the same process (preview > beta > pub release), maybe a few months overall?

That preview was started back in dec 2020, so going on ~3 months preview, I would expect beta fairly soon (just my own personal assumption, not making any promises or having any inside scheduling info). Personally I have been waiting for the beta to get released so I can try it out myself.

I can’t speak upon your specific subtitles issue, definitely looks like some kind of bug, but I don’t know if it will get fixed…

As a similarly heavy subtitle user, I also don’t want open subtitles to go away, I will be very upset if it does.

Thanks again for the comforting words. May I know how does bug reporting work with Plex support forum? Plex doesn’t seem to have any direct support channel except this forum, right? So how does one report a bug, especially a paying customer?

the forums support is all we get. it’s a community (self) support forum for all users, plex pass doesn’t entail getting dedicated support.

unfortunately, there are no public bug trackers or ways to file bugs/issues/etc.

but there are a lot of helpful advanced users, that like to help folks out, the mod team also try to provide help where we can, and various plex team members/devs are around as well.

the best way is do as you have done, create a post with as much details as you can, any specific reproduction steps, and full (debug, not verbose) logs can be attached to a reply can go a long way to getting a problem identified and a possible solution or proving out a genuine bug.

In an attempt to workaround this issue, I removed both The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse and Mickey Mouse from my library and performed Clean Bundles and Optimize Database. I then re-added Mickey Mouse and after a while, it still attached the subtitles from The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse to it.

Checking Plex Media Server.log, I found the following.

I’m not sure what happened but the log indicates that no subtitles are found. However, how did the agent suddenly come up with Comparing "The.Wonderful.World.of.Mickey.Mouse.xxxx? Then it actually download them from opensubtitle.org.

I try to Delete the subtitle using the “x” button and it still can’t be deleted. Perhaps the “x” button is to be used with the “On demand subtitle” feature. Meaning, subtitle downloaded by opensubtitle.org cannot be deleted?

in lieu of an open-subtitles work around, you might try @ GitHub - pannal/Sub-Zero.bundle: Subtitles for Plex, as good you would expect them to be. which offers more granular control over what sub quality is downloaded etc.

of course the same fate of going away/not working may eventually happen to SZ too, but until then, it may be of use.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have installed it and will be testing it. I’m surprised to see that one of its capability is to re-sync the sub (with mod).
