I’m currently using a Netgear ReadyNAS 104 as my Plex server. However, I’ve got an older Mac mini lying around (Core i3, 4GB RAM, 512GB HD (not SSD sadly)) and I was wondering if there were any clear advantages to using that as the server instead? It would be dedicated to Plex and not running anything else. The actual media would still be on the Netgear NAS.
And the answer is indeed - The Mac. I was worried about how much disk space the metadata would take up, but it turns out not to be much. I can already see a clear speed advantage. To be on the safe side I’m using the beta software posted in another thread.
And of course that metadata grows depending on your settings. If you have all the bells and whistles turned on, Trailers, Extras, Thumbnails and so on.
