googling it would actually prove to be useless, as there are previous generations and an international version labeled “mi box” that are not proper Android TV devices.
The new build from 2/13 (5.5.0.227) still hasn’t fixed the issue
Now running 5.6.0.386-beta , still broken.
DTS videos play with no sound, and DD5.1 play as stereo PCM.
Is anyone looking into this issue?
This is something that Plex devs cannot fix, as Plex uses ExoPlayer, which detects the audio capabilities only using HDMI connections. When using anything else, like optical, the stream will be transcoded as the “device doesn’t support it…”
For more info, check: https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/1741
so plex team need to bring a fix, their version of exoplayer is already customized.
FYI just wanted to update everyone. Got the OK to give an update from IanDBird who I’m talking to in private messages about this bug.
IanDBird wrote optical passthrough support for the Android TV version of the app. It works fine on the Mi Box for AC3 but DTS does not work yet.
He needs to do more testing with a Sony ATV 2005 model since DTS support was just pushed out on EU models but right now he’s traveling for work so obviously he can’t test. Once he gets back in the office he’ll continue testing.
He can’t push out the code yet because when it doesn’t work, it totally breaks playback.
They have a two week window from the time it gets pushed out as beta to the time it gets pushed out to everyone so he can’t push out a partial fix because it would need to be pulled if DTS still isn’t working after two weeks and that’s not good business.
So the fix is coming but it needs more testing. Mi Box users your time is near to have digital 5.1 audio. Just a little more testing and it’s good to go.

Ooh, that sounds promising. I have the XBR65x-850C - do you have a link to a changelog which mentions the fix?

Support for optical is still internal only until we get the last few bugs sorted.

This has nothing to do with ExoPlayer, it used to work with Kodi because they force the audio output over PCM for SPDIF, which they have had to remove as it causes bigger issues (blowing out speakers etc…).

Understood…but I meant a changelog from Sony mentioning that there’s a fix for DTS playback.

Are you sure about this? Marshmallow is only just being pushed to the EU and it fact it was just delayed. My US TV already has Marshmallow and DTS is not fixed.
Bumping this discussion since a new Marshmallow update has been pushed in the US. Is DTS now working with Beta?
Anyone? Just looking for a followup.
Problem still exists for me (i.e. no DD5.1 over SPDIF to external receiver). Using Android 6.0. It’s all gone a bit quiet with regard to a fix - seemingly Plex are saying it’s a Sony Android TV implementation issue, and it’s not a problem that Plex can fix. So, when or even if, it gets fixed is anyones guess.
Works now for me on Shield Experience 5.2 with Optical from USB Sound Card to my ancient HDMI-less receiver. Finally 5.1 DD and DTS using the Plex for Android TV app! I think this is due to Shield 5.2 upgrade having added IEC passthrough support.
And now it stopped working
the latest 6.0.1 version does indeed directplay the video with DTS, but the receiver doesn’t output any sound and it remains in Pro Logic mode, thus not detecting the incoming signal properly…blah
And…after a Shield restart it works again…hmmm
Hi @Joe4992, did you get any update from IanDBird regarding if DD5.1 is ever going to be fixed for Sony Bravia TVs connected via Optical? Or do we have to get another box (e.g. Shield) to get multi-channel to work … cord-cutting, but with more boxes…
Thanks in advance.

I think IanDBird has left the company. I PM’ed him a couple weeks ago and he never replied back. So who knows the status on this bug now. He was the only one working on it.

Not replying to a PM does not mean he has left. He hadn’t updated his LinkedIn page to say he’s working elsewhere so I doubt it.
