I would like the optimization functionality to be able to be configured to optimize off of the next highest quality instead of the top quality.
For Example:
Blu-ray movie has been ripped to an MKV file.
The MKV file has been optimized using default “Optimized for TV”.
Maybe, in the optimization tool, we can identify what other existing optimizations would be used for this optimization (Here I am solutioning).
Want to optimize for mobile. When optimizing for mobile, it takes as much time as it took to transcode for TV as it does to mobile.
It would be nice to configure the optimization tool to optimize from an optimized version (in this case Optimized for TV instead of the Original).
Creating lossy copies of a lossy copy will give you noticeable quality reductions.
As for “saving time”… usually, the time critical aspect is the encoding. That’s driven by the output quality, not if you’re optimizing from your source/raw/original version or a previously optimized video.
If you want faster transcodes you can change the transcoder quality setting to prefer speed instead of quality. I don’t know how much that will help but making a copy of a copy does not sound like a good idea.
I can possibly see that being used for streaming, but not for optimization. You want a nice quality file sitting on your drive.
