All of my videos are DVD rips from Handbrake, using the Roku 1080 preset that’s provided in the program. I have a QNAP NAS hard-wired to my Roku box. Is there any added benefit to using the optimization feature in the Plex app?
Also, if I create an optimized version, is there any reason to keep the original file? Or, will the optimized one suffice?
Thank you
just ignore “optimization”. it’ll do you no good, especially if the files are already encoded with your main playback device in mind.
If using Plex’s Mystery Science Optimizer 3000 feeds your sense of adventure (like using something you have almost no control over - and hoping it does a good enough job to delete the original)… then by all means do it.
Apparently you already know how to use Handbrake (if not, there’s a Guide in my sig) and all indications are that it’s working for you and you are making rips that play (Direct Play, hopefully). You do have absolute control over what happens in Handbrake - so it’s probably not as mysterious, or exciting as rolling the bones on Plex’s Mystery Science Optimizer 3000, but is bound to be more predictable… at least.
Plex’s Mystery Science Optimizer 3000 is more suited to users that HAVE NO EARTHLY IDEA WHAT THEY’RE DOING, and frankly, don’t care all that much about what’s dropped out of the awful orifice on the back end. They mindlessly push the button, and mindlessly accept what ever is churned out.
Users that actually care about the material they’re storing and watching have seen the horrors that happen whenever Plex’s Goofy Transcoder is switched on and don’t want any part of it.
Veteran Users (now called ‘Power Users’) already know Plex Developers don’t know how to encode (if the Plex Transcoder they set up is any indication of their skill in this area), so we avoid the beast at ALL costs.
I suggest you avoid the beast at all costs and continue what you’re doing…
B)
Probably worth mentioning at this point… if you delete the original - make sure you have moved the ‘Optimized’ Version - or Plex will delete it as well - illustrating perfectly that Plex Developers don’t have much of a clue when it comes to designing things that make sense to the general public… logic dictates if you Optimize a file, then delete the original - it’s because you wanted to keep the Optimized Version, but Plex Minds don’t think like that - and Plex Minds aren’t in the habit of learning how users actually use the product by asking them - or listening to what they’re saying about it’s use.
