Optimize files once a user watches

Anyone ever thought of having a way to optimize files once someone starts watching it? The use case here is we have a lot of home videos being added all the time and some get watched others do not. I’d rather not waste the electricity and resources to create optimized versions that do not get watched. By having a “when watched” trigger, the first person would get a transcoded/direct stream, depending on the player, and then that would setup the file to be optimized so people that watch it later would already have a pre-encoded version waiting.

From what I gather, I could sort the library by watched and have that be optimized, however, this would not take into consideration the watch status of other users.
