Optimizing 1080p and still 1080p

I have 1080p MP4 about 3.6GB movie that I’m trying to create optimized versions. I choose Optimize for Mobile or Custom (Universal, 480p. 1.5Mbps) and the result is the same where it creates a new 1080p file that is 3.4GB (ish). Am I misinderstanding the feature: I expect to find a 720p or 470p that is notably smaller after the new version is created. When I try to playback I get error from the player about bandwidth saying I need 7Mbps or so which tells me I’m not getting the result I expect with the new version.

Suggestions?

Check “settings > manage > optimized versions” to see if the optimized version was successful. It’s possible it was unable to optimize it or is in progress.

In those cases were it was unsuccessful, I’ve used Handbrake to create optimized versions.

Good suggestion. I do see the version was created and can select it to play. However, it’s still 1080p and 3.4 GB (vs. the 3.6GB original) so definitely new encoding but not 480p or notably smaller.

Do you have SettingsTranscoderDisable video stream transcoding enabled?

I’ve experienced unpredictable/incorrect Optimize ... jobs when that is enabled.

Is this the first Optimized version you’ve created for these files? Or do you already have other Optimized versions for these files?

Turns out I did have that setting. I’ve unchecked (is now enabled) and kicked off the optimize setting again. Now it looks like it’s doing what I asked as the conversion is taking much longer. Before it competed in a few minutes and now it’s queued to run for much longer. I’ll report back…

Please report back. I think it’s a bug when that setting is enabled.

Confirmed that when I unchecked the option to disable transcoder my optimized versions are now correctly rendered! Thank you all for guidance on this.
