Plex makes a great companion for Bigscreen, allowing users to enjoy multimedia content together!
The current setup is a bit involved, requiring the presenter to:
- Install Bigscreen with Steam on a Windows 10 machine with modest hardware.
- Launch a Plex client, such as the Plex Web browser client, on the Windows machine.
- Fool with Bigscreen broadcast settings (480p or lower works best for audio-video sync).
- Finally, enter a room ID into the Bigscreen Windows app.
This process allows a Windows user to share videos with friends on the Bigscreen VR platform. It works well with Quest 2 headsets in standalone mode, and support is also available for other PCVR capable headsets.
However, the setup process is a bit involved for the presenter. Adding a plugin to Plex Media Server would allow for direct broadcasting to the Bigscreen room, skipping the need to run the Plex client and the Bigscreen virtual desktop server.
Heck, many users might not have a Windows machine available anyway. They could be using pure Quest 2 by itself, or possibly have a macOS or Linux machine. So enabling Bigscreen sharing at the Plex Media Server would bring more users into the fold.
Perhaps the Bigscreen technical staff can assist with documenting their room API, so that Plex can plug right into it.
As an aside, there appears to be some kind of Plex VR app of its own. I do not know if it will ever release for the modern Quest 2 headset, though. Or if it allows for the kind of collaborative viewing experience that Bigscreen and other VR apps provide.
