First, I would like to say again that I really appreciate everything the Plex team does and I am very happy with PHT 1.0.1. The addition of the sidebar filter menu instead of the initial sorting screen is a huge improvement and will make filtering media much more useful. It seems right now that if you try to filter by different categories, such as the year 2012 and the actor Chris Hemsworth it applies AND logic so you get back The Avengers, Cabin in the Woods, and Red Dawn. But if you then want to add another actor to the filter, such as Robert Downey Jr, OR logic is applied to the actors so instead of returning just The Avengers, you still get the same 3 movies. I think it would be useful to add the option for Genre, Actor, and Collection where you can choose whether the filter will use AND or OR. That way, I can filter for Horror AND Comedy and get back Shaun of the Dead and This is the End instead of 18 Horror movies and 156 Comedies. I think this wouldn't be too difficult to implement and could just be an option when you choose any of those categories before you actually select the filter. This should be applied both to Plex/Web and PHT since they have the exact same filter menu. I think there is also the option to add NOT logic but that would be more difficult and not have as much use. I hope that this feature is added in the near future.
Wow! I am surprised at how little support there is for this feature request. Does a duplicate exist elsewhere?
I find it odd that ‘adding’ filters actually INCREASES my result pool instead of, well, ‘filtering’ it down by reducing it. I mean, if I’m in the mood to see an “Action” “Comedy”, I certainly don’t want a list of ALL Action movies and ALL Comedies. Yet, if I apply both of those Genre filters, that’s what I get - a larger pool instead of a smaller one. And the bigger my library gets, the more pronounced the problem becomes.
It’s difficult to imagine that more users don’t have this problem. I guess I’m wrong.
Just like the new Apple TV ads, where you can say “Show me comedies”, then say “Just the ones with Owen Wilson”, I’d love the ability to do the same things in Plex. Currently, on iOS if I add a filter, and then add another, it just replaces the last filter instead of doing an AND.
This would be a great feature to have, especially for the day when you can do a Siri search in Plex.
Since this was asked for back in 2013 (maybe even before) and Plex has not deemed it worthy of implementation before now so I very much doubt it will get implemented in 2016, 2017 2018 or any time before the 23rd century and probably not even then.
Plex has been too busy making things prettier and generally less functional to be bothered with thinks that might actually improve the versatility of Plex.
In the clients they eliminated the ability to sort by more than one genera at a time and they “claim” that we should use playlists created in the web interface but shows selected from playlists cannot be viewed in the same way as you can view them when browsing on the client and creating playlists means that you have to preplan what you might be interested in or desirous of in the nebulous future. That is NOT the best user experience and many clients could do select multiple genera before Plex decided to redesign what was not broken.
Also it is not possible to simultaneously sort by genera and other fields and you cannot even sort by more than one genera and there is not an or as you noted and no not either and that is not all that is missing from sorting in at least most clients.
That is sorting in the clients is about as dumb as it can get so as to avoid confusing us poor stupid users.
Plex is trying to force everyone into one vision of their media because Plex knows best for everyone and what Plex wants is the only way that media should be accessed and displayed.
Plex has written a very good suite of software and then, when it was approaching becoming great, they decided to effectively neuter it and perform a lobotomy.
Do not expect any movement forward in functionality but it surely is getting prettier.
