ID3v2 contains two date tags - Original Date and Release Date. This is used for reissues, remasters, deluxe versions, etc. At the moment, Plex only exposes Original Date (as “Date”) and sorts albums by that, lumping all releases of the same album together at the year of release which doesn’t entirely make sense in a chronological listing.
I’d like to see an option to sort by Release Date so people who have fully tagged albums - whereby different releases of an album are tagged with the same Original Date but different Release Dates - would see those albums in the correct place in the artists’ chronologies.
(Edit: If I use Personal Media artists, the correct date is used but you lose a lot of the other information that the Plex Agent pulls in. Perhaps then the issue is that Plex is putting the date information in the wrong tag?)
