It would be nice if plex supported the release date and original release date fields that Musicbrainz writes to the ID3 tags.
For example, I have 2 versions of the ELO album Zoom in my library. There is a 2001 release and a 2014 release. Why do I have them both? Because 2001 includes a bonus track not on the 2014 release and the 2014 release contains 2 bonus tracks not on the 2001 release. Plex picked them both up, but marked them both with the year 2001.
Logic tells me I should just combine these two albums, but I can't. Because almost all cataloging scanners simply barf and don't know what to do.
Older albums also have multiple different remasters. I like to know which one I have. Do I have the 1997 Rush remaster, or the 2011 release?
Yeah, I know what you mean. Personally, I mostly prefer to have the original release date listed, even for remasters, since it looks weird to me to see a 1972 album listed as 2012, even if it did add a bonus track and get remastered.
The good news is that you can edit the year if you want it changed inside Plex, and it'll be locked after that...
That's a LOT of manual editing. What's the chance that we can get this on the feature request list, to show release date, original release date, and to sort by either?
There really is no reason to sort by release date. That would be seriously confusing. You'd be staring at Plex going "Bohemian Rhapsody DID NOT come in 2013!"
