Organising movie files - collections

I have started sorting my movie library into collections. I first applied one tag to distinguish various sources (download, dvd, bluray, 4k). Now before applying these tags, the server did suggest me related or similar movies, but once I apply these tags, it will only show movies from the same (big) collection - typically not related. Thus, where I want win information through collections, I actually loose some. This feature does not make much sense to me, because I can go into the collection to see all movies for which I used the same tag, and would rather like to see “intelligent” suggestions as before.
I’m curious about tips/experiences of how to make best use of the collections feature, and if there is a way to prevent the above behaviour.

I suppose the “purpose” of collections is to identify movies sequels or franchises (e.g. Harry Potter 1-8, Lord of the Rings 1-3, Pixar Movies, Marvel Cinematic Universe). In this context it makes sense for Plex to show the movies in the same collections as alternative to other sources of related movies.

If you want to document other technical information in a way you can later use to filter/identify the movies, you might be better served with some of the other fields. I’ve seen some users who applied that information to the Label field in the Sharing section. The Label has no immediate impact on Plex’ own behavior – and you’re basically free to define as many of them as you want… no need to use all of them to actually limit/fine-tune your sharing.

Thanks for the suggestion!
Using tags in sharing does not really do the job. These tags are not inlcuded in searches. Thus, the only way using them would be creating restricted user accounts (what I have just tested succesfully), but I do not want a user for each tag category. Before doing this I would rather create separate libraries.
Conversely, I don’t think using any other of the regular fields is sensible because I want the agents being able to update the meta data.
May be this might end into a new feature request to add one user-controlled additional tag field that is searchable? Still looking for ideas and experiences …

Well… you’ll be able to filter by the Label tag.
I’m no longer exactly sure what you’re aiming for. Is this more about documenting the source media type (and potentially filter items based on their source) or are you looking for some deeper use case?

Filtering by label does all I need. (I had only examined search, not filtering.)
Thank you so much!
