Hi I recently purchased a new Nvidia Shield (2019). I’m setting up a Plex server however in playback settings I don’t get the option to play in original quality. The highest option it gives is 1080P (high) 20/MB/s.
This is my second shield TV (2019), on the previous one it gave me the original quality playback option. I’m using the same TV. Now I get a HDR conversion error/warning on the same files that played just fine on my previous Shield TV.
Shield TV app 8.20.1.26670 updated on (July 15, 2021).
I’ve attached the error message that I receive. After I press OK it goes away and the video plays. I’m not sure if the original 4k is playing or it may be transcoded? If it’s original 4k playback then I don’t mind the error. Just bizarre that it’s happening. I’ve also put a photo of the resolution options it gives me. As you can see no original option.
FYI I don’t have automatic resolution adjustment enabled.
That message has always been there. Not sure why you are getting it now or why you didn’t see it before. Can you reproduce the message then get me the Android log from the Shield?
Thanks for the response, if maximum is the same as original then that solves my problem. I thought it would say original quality. Maximum would mean there is no transcoding happening, I assume? Not sure why I haven’t seen that error message before. Maybe I have and just pressed OK. I can’t re-create it anymore because it went away after I pressed OK.
Yes they are. Not sure why we use different wording. I’ll bring that up with the team.
Maximum/Original means that the video will have the same bitrate as the original (i.e. no bitrate limit that would trigger a transcode). However, there are other reasons that could cause a transcode. Just using that setting does not guarantee that there is no transcode, just that it won’t transcode due to the bitrate. If you see transcoding and want to know why, please provide the logs from the Android app that show the start of the playback.
The message isn’t shown every time. We don’t want to nag you so it is shown periodically. I don’t know exactly how often, but you may see it again in the future.
To be clarify, the quality setting is “maximum”, which means to not set a bitrate limitation for determining if something will transcode. That’s what all the other quality settings mean. It’s when a bitrate triggers the transcode.
The option to “Play original” does mean to direct play and that will only be available if the file can be direct played. If the file has to be transcoded, it will say “maximum” to indicate that it will not use a bitrate limitation when transcoding. So you will only see this option in the Playback Settings while something is playing if it can be direct played.
