Is it possible to disable Plex Transcoding from DTS etc to AAC when playing to the Samsung Plex App?
I understand that the TV cannot play DTS, however my Bose Soundbar has no issues playing this?
I am playing from OSX Plex Server wirelessly to the TV, clearly the Plex TV app is saying I can’t play this so I don’t get an option on the TV to direct stream the audio or anything.
However if I install Kodi and stream to the TV the audio plays just fine, also if I plug in the USB drive directly to the TV it also plays fine, i.e. full DTS sound.
If I play through Plex the sound is crap, no depth, just the AAC transcoded audio. The difference between the two is deafening.
Why can’t we be in some control of these things, isn’t that what the advanced options should be allowing us to do in the server app after all??
If we can’t get this sorted I’ll have to just use the crap Kodi interface, not as nice to use but once the movie is playing at least it sounds correct??!
The Kodi app and local media player are likely using software decoding for the DTS audio. That is not available in the Plex app, so no there is no way to force this. However, if your TV is connected to an AVR, plex should be transcoding the audio to something better supported than AAC unless that’s the only common codec between your TV’s hardware and the AVR.
Can you enable “logging to server” on the Plex for Samsung app, reproduce the playback, then grab your server logs.
Your logs show that PMS transocded the audio to 5.1 AAC. Does your receiver handle that? If not, the TV may be doing it’s own down sampling to stereo or something else. Does your TV have a digital audio out setting, if so, make sure it’s enabled and choose an audio type your receiver likes.
HDMI-eARC Mode, set to Auto
Digital Output Audio For… set to Auto, only only other option is PCM
Dolby Atmos set to on, but have tried to change this to off with no difference.
As I say audio is great when connecting directly to the drive via USB, so the TV can read the audio fine and play correctly to the Bose Soundbar 700, only when playing through Plex is it getting transcoded to AAC.
That’s odd. I would have expected to see Dolby as an option. Is there a passthrough setting too? If so, instead of auto try setting it to always be on.
so the TV can read the audio fine and play correctly
Again, this is likely due to the Samsung Media Player doing software decoding of the DTS track. DTS needs to be licensed and it was likely cheaper for Samsung to license it only for their player versus the entire TV, so doing software decoding on the TV is unavailable to the Plex app.
