Overriding Cover Art in the updated Music Library

Server Version#: 1.17.0.1841
Player Version#: app plex tv (hosted site)

I’ve been using Plex for about 6 years now. I like how my music library is set up. I’m in the process of ensuring my music library is accurate before updating to 1.18. I have some questions about overriding cover art for Artists and Albums. I’ve read many forum articles but there is still something confusing for me.

Even though most of my embedded data is likely correct, I don’t want to rely on it. I would rather ensure that my directory structures are accurate and have Plex populate my library. (Question 1) So, in the Music Library Advanced Options, I’m planning on keeping the Use Embedded Tags unchecked. Correct?

After it initially populates to the new format, I’m sure there are going to be Artist images that it won’t pick up (I have some for sure) and others that I don’t want to use (odd angles, black and white, too far away, etc). In that case, I’ll want to use my own image. I’m planning on putting that image in the /music/artist directory, entitled cover.jpg. (Question 2), So, in the Settings >> Agent >> Artist screen, I should continue to have Local Media Assets (Artists) checked and in the upper most level, correct? I’m assuming it will work as follows: if there is a user-supplied image in the Artist folder, it will use it and if there isn’t, then it will use the one that Plex fetches. I’m curious to see what Plex fetches, so I don’t want to start out with any in the Artist directory, but I’ll put them there after the initial update.

After it initially populates to the new format, I’m sure there are going to be Album images that it won’t pick up (I have some for sure) and others that I don’t want to use (wrong versions, etc). In that case, I’ll want to use my own image. I’m planning on putting that image in the /music/artist/album directory, entitled cover.jpg. (Question 3), So, in the Settings >> Agent >> Albums screen, I should continue to have Local Media Assets (Albums) checked and in the upper most level, correct? I’m assuming it will work as follows: if there is a user-supplied image in the Album folder, it will use it and if there isn’t, then it will use the one that Plex fetches. I’m curious to see what Plex fetches, so I don’t want to start out with any in the Album directory, but I’ll put them there after the initial update.

In a nutshell, I want the ability to use my own Artists and Album images sometimes (by putting them into their associated directories) but otherwise I’ll use the ones that Plex fetches. I also don’t want to use embedded tags. I’m assuming the above is correct as that is how I’m organizing my music directory prior to upgrading to 1.18 and upgrading my library.

Any thoughts?

No.

artist-poster.jpg <--- a photo of the artist
artist-background.jpg <--- a background/wallpaper particular to the artist

From now on, this is even the only configuration you should be using in any case. Nothing good will come from putting the LMA line further downward.

Inspect the properties of your music library. Anything that can be configured with the new music stuff is done there.

Correct.
