Depressing to see how long this has been open for without so much as an acknowledgment from the plex team. Even just a hint about how to organise our media to work around this would be extremely helpful.
I totally agree, can we get an update on when there might be some kind of parental control, adult-only, or some kind of option to seperate identified content?
It's awful to be forced to limit plex to access only content which everyone in the family is ok to watch and then have to set up something else for the other half of my media. We need some way to restrict adult content to users with an access code or something along those lines. Seems like that would be easy to do in the web interface and applications, then maybe an "authorized to view" mac or ip list for dlna?
Without any kind of restriction or control, I'm going to be forced to use another solution. However, if this is coming as a beta feature or unsupported hack or something along those lines, I'd love to know so I can subscribe and provide whatever support I can.
Thanks!
Guess which problem I've ran into...
... i have been looking for a 'Parental Lock' for certain media on PMS.
+1 for the PIN idea it seems like the ideal and most elegant solution. I was surprised when I came to requiring it that this feature wasn't in some way available out-of-the-box.
Although I see some potential pitfalls. We use Plex across PMC (Mac), Plex for Windows Phone 7, Plex for Android, a Sony Internet ready Blu Ray Player and a Sony Playstation. Now whilst I think a PIN could be (reasonably) easily implemented across the PMC, WinPhone and Android platform apps. The Sony Blu Ray and Playstation simply see Plex as a Media Server and the folder structure and content can be simply browsed and played through the Sony User Interface so I'm not sure how password protected media would work here(?)!
Perhaps there is a way to make the PMS available only to certain I.P. addresses through Plexweb or something. Then aleast it is possible to set up a separate PMS for R rated content
+1 from me too, Would be great to know the kids are safe from watching some of the TV and Movies I have in my own sections.
+1. This is an important feature for me and my family as well.
Honestly I used to be on the parental controls side as well but have been using the accounts/pin method and find it works really well. Every family member has their own account and the kids can only access the kids movies, tv shows and home videos. The great part about separate accounts is my 'On Deck' isn't filled up with kiddy shows or chick flix! (;
Just my 2 cents...
Might be falling on deaf ears but I still need to add my +1.
+1 yes yes.. would like this to be implemented!

+1. I would like to request some kind of Parental Control/Privacy settings.

How does this work on a PS3 or Roku? I have not set up multiple accounts yet, but on the PS3, it just shows the PS3 file/folder tree, and the Roku just connects without requiring a log in.

Could you be more specific and share the details of your set-up? I have focused our household around plex including choosing a Sammy TV because of the hard work of the author of its Plex client. Everything on it is fair use I might add. My 6yr old is now running away with his control of that, and right now I can tell him what he should and shouldn't watch and he respects that. He's also supervised, but any day now his curiosity is gonna make him find the opportunity to watch what I've said he shouldn't (South Park is bound to be his first stop having seen the poster frames).
I'd love to know how you manage that please...
...and I'd also like to stress to the team steering plex, that one of the steps to becoming trusted is to take parental control seriously.

Currently, the only way to achieve this is to separate your media into folders (I use MPAA ratings) and then only share the folders that you want the kids to see.
/Movies /Rated-G /Rated-PG /Rated-PG13 /Rated-R
All of my movies go into these folders.
Then I created a Kids Library that only has the folders I wanted them to see in it.
From there I just share that library with their free myplex account.
I do the same with TV Shows.
The issue you will run into is switching between accounts on the app/device you play media on.
Some are more graceful than others.
The only issue that I run across is that I still want my kids to have the ability to sync content to their iPads / iPhones etc. I can create a separate account for them and only share the libraries I want them to watch which is fine. I thought I'd be smart and play for Plexpass for their account so they had Sync but you can't sync shared libraries so that was a waste (at least they refunded my money - I figured it out in like 15 minutes).
I already put the movies I don't want them to watch in a separate library so that's not an issue. For me personally I don't even care about them seeing the covers in on-deck etc because I don't have anything that bad in my library (ie;porn).
If they could just give you the ability to PIN or password protect certain libraries I would be happy as can be!
Yep, I would like to see content filtering too. We have friends kids coming round on a regular basis & as we don't have kids, I don't really want them watching my horror movie collection!
So yes, content protection with pin for anything over a certain threshold you can set / keyword detection etc.
+1 :)

We are using roku devices so multiple accounts wont work. Unfortunately I've had to disable plex until a solution can be found as the kids have full access to everything when clicking on the plex icon.

actually if you use the modified Rarflix channel it will

Another +1 for this from me. A pin based system would work wonders. I can't expect my young kids to be signing in and out of Plex on their own so I need some sort of restrictions based on library to keep them out of the adult content.
Has any changes been made to Parental Controls in the latest revisions of PLEX since the last post in October 2014? This is a very important feature for me but I can’t find any new information.
