Partial library move?

I’ve read https://support.plex.tv/articles/201154537-move-media-content-to-a-new-location/ which I’ve successfully used when replacing a drive, or moving everything at one time to a new location. And seen lots of questions about moving an entire library from one drive/folder to another, but none talk about moving a partial library.

Long story short, because 8TB drives were available I created a pool of them (“Drive F”) and put my movies there Since then, I added a pool of 14TB’s (“Drive G”). Because it was a lot less data to move, I moved my TV shows to “Drive G”. YUP I didn’t think about the future.

Well NOW “Drive F” is filling up, and its not worth buying new 8TB’s, and the 8TB pool I have is still good… So I want to move my Movies to “Drive G” (the pool of 14TB drives), and my move my TV Shows to “Drive F” (the pool of 8TBs).

I’ve already stopped plex and moved the TV shows. It took way longer than I expected. Because of how much space the movies take up… I know its going to take a while and I don’t want to move all of them at one time.

Is there any issue following the above instructions kind of. Like basically stop plex, move part to the new folder, then rather than remove the old folder, start Plex, add the new folder, let it scan… and keep plex running, then in a few days from now, stop Plex and repeat? And once everything is finally moved, remove the old folder path.

Or will it cause an issue? Do I NEED to move the entire movie folder at one go?

My guess it it will probably be ok moving part today, part “next week”, but just want to make sure. I’m also guessing it will just rescan my folders, pickup the files in the new location as if it was new media, and remove the entry from the old as if I deleted the old file?

I imagine the procedure is the same for a full or partial library. You don’t even need to stop your server. Copy the stuff you want to move to the new area. Add it as a folder in your EXISTING library and it will pick up all the duplicates. Once those scans have been completed, you should be able to safely remove them from the old area.

Yup Ive done what you have done. Its just that simple.

Isn’t the point of a pool that it can be easily extended by adding more drives
(or replacing the existing ones with larger models) without data loss?

Yes, but consider me chicken for not wanting to start adding 14TB drives into an existing pool of 8TB drives way back then (I was too afraid of messing up and losing the data, or not using the full size of the 14’s)…

I’m familiar enough to create a pool, add drives (based on columns/stripe) and expand, or replace a single failed drive and rebuild, when using the SAME drives… I don’t have experience or trust myself intermixing sizes.

So now I’m living with my limits.

And sure, I could have bought more 8TB drives to expand the pool back then, but I’m limited on how many drives I can have connected and internal, plus the cost per TB on the 14’s made more sense to get them.
