Performance Issues with HEVC Files on Apple TV

I’ve been a long-time user of Plex and generally love the platform, but I’ve recently encountered a significant issue when streaming HEVC files on my Apple TV. Whenever I try to play videos in HEVC format, the playback becomes choppy, with frequent stuttering and lag. This issue is quite frustrating as it interrupts the viewing experience and makes it difficult to enjoy my media.

I’ve tested my network connection, which is stable and fast, so I believe the problem lies with the app’s ability to handle HEVC files on Apple TV. Other file formats work smoothly, so it seems to be an issue specific to HEVC.

I hope the development team can address this problem soon, as it’s affecting my overall experience with Plex on Apple TV. A fix would be greatly appreciated, as I would love to continue using Plex as my go-to media server without these interruptions.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Read the entire thread. Maybe. :upside_down_face:

The short answer is that it’s a known issue and is currently being worked on.

Thanks @pshanew for directing this OP to the Beta Testing Discussion.

To update the OP, the recent Update Versions with Experimental Player have made leaps and bounds with a variety of file types. HEVC runs smooth and is my compression of choice, a no brainer considering the advantages. Along the way many smaller ATV issues have also been fixed. So as pshanew suggested the indicated discussion is a good read.

I’m not sure if this will help, but the same HEVC file played from the Plex app on my iPhone 12 mini works perfectly. However, on my Apple TV model A1625 with tvOS 17.6, I experience issues with stuttering and lag.
